Sri Sandeepani Gurukulam ---- Veda Patasala of our Mission
(Occasion of certificates distribution to prize winning Vidyãrthiis [students])

Sri Swamiji has been rendering ‘Upanyãs’ (discourses), in Tamizh. This is being brought to you here.

There may appear to be variations in the ‘tense’ of the language. This is due to the fact that great effort has been taken to maintain the original style of the ‘Upanyãs’. Therefore, we request you to keep this in mind while reading the translated ‘words’ of Sri Swamiji.

Sri Swamiji,

"HARE RÃMA HARE RÃMA RÃMA RÃMA HARE HARE
HARE KRISHNA HARE KRISHNA KRISHNA KRISHNA HARE HARE"

At the outset, His Holiness Sri Sri Swamiji briefly addressed the Vedic Scholars,
Sri Sandeepani Gurukula Adhyapaks (Teachers), vidyãrthiis, their parents and devotees:

" In the society when one desires to know the correctness of an act he seeks an advocate who knows the Indian penal code. It is the social law. Likewise, the correctness of our ‘loukika’ (worldly) or ‘paramãrtika’ (spiritual) work is known only through the Vedas. The Vedas is the Universal law. The Vedas is the eternal law. Science says that when a particular type of butterfly flies the movement of its wings affects the cosmos - earthquake occurs or there are rains. In the same way, the Vedas - the sound of the Vedas influences the Cosmos. The Vedas is also known as Nigamam, Ãmnãyam and Trayi.

It is said that the Gita is not mentioned anywhere in the ‘Nãlãyira Divya Prabandam’ (4000 verses sung in praise of the Lord [Vishnu] by the Ãzhwãrs). But, once
Maha Periyava pointed that in one Pãsuram is found the words ‘Madhavan odiya’ - ‘Odiya’ means ‘through word of mouth’ - one says and another listens. Here Bhagavãn says and Arjuna listens. ‘Therefore, the Gita has indeed been mentioned in Diyva Prabandam,’ pointed out Periyava. The Vedas is learnt through word of mouth. Avvaiyãr also says, ‘Odãmal oru nãllum irukkavendãm’ - here ‘odãmal’ refers to the chanting of the Vedas. Not a day should be spent without chanting the Vedas.

The genuineness of our act can be known only by the Vedas. Only the Vedas is the‘ãdhãram’ (basis) for any ‘kãrya’ (work/action) to be carried out. If the Vedas die then one cannot know what is right and what is wrong. Hence, Maha Periyava (of Kanchi Kamakoti peetam) worked assiduously towards keeping the Vedas alive. Though we say that the Vedas is the ‘ãdhãram’ (foundation) of our Religion it is so for all Religions. The Vedas is the basic principle on which our works are carried out. Therefore, we opened a Veda Patasala - Sri Sãndeepani Gurukulam - in our Ashram in 1995 on the day of Maha Periyava Jayanti.

Yajur and Sãma Vedas are taught here. The senior students of Yajur Veda are housed in Madhuramurali Bhavanam, Ãlapãkkam, Chennai, and learn under Sri Mallikãrjuna Sarma. The Sãma Veda and Yajur veda for the rest is run in the Mathurãpuri Ashram, Malaipattu. It now imparts Vedic knowledge to about 50 students. They are also taught the Gita, the Bhãgavatam and spoken Sanskrit. Sri Jagadeesh teaches Yajur Veda while Sri Satyamoorty Shrowthigal and Sri Mruthyunjaya Sarma teach the Sãma Veda. These children are here this morning to receive the certificates for their academic performance.

We also run Ãgama pãtasãla in Tirunãngoor that prepares Temple priests. When I visited temples I found the Bhattãchãryãs and Gurukkul sixty or more years of age. I wondered who would perform ‘Kumbabhishekam’ or pujas after them? The next generation of Bhattãchãryãs and Gurukkuls are being readied. In Tirunãngoor we run Vainava Ãgama pãtasãla and in Goodalur Siva Ãgama pãtasãla.

GOPIKA JEEVANASMARANAM!
GOVINDA! GOVINDA!”

After a short address by Sri Mallikãrjuna Sarma, Mukhya Adhyapak of our Sri Sãndeepani Gurukulam, the Veda Patasala students were honoured with certificates for successful completion of various courses in the Patasala.
