An episode from the life of Thirumangai
Alwar, one of the 12 Alwars, was enacted by Sri Swamigal and the
group of His young male devotees, outside the Ashram premises
on the road going towards Maahaanyam village.
An ardent devotee of 'Perumal', Thirumangai
alwar, an ousted royal chief, lived in the Tiruvaali - Nangoor area.
He robbed the wealthy to feed the vaishnavites and renovate/maintain
the local Divya Desa perumal temples. Bound by the love of this
devotee the Lord decided to 'grace' him with the 'Ashtaakshara'
(the eight lettered) mantra.
He then took the form of a wealthy
bridegroom and came to the forest area of His beloved devotee,
as if in passing, surrounded by a marriage party, all carrying
diamond, gold, silver and other precious gems. The devotee,
unaware of the true identity of his victim, attacked the
marriage party.
To his amazement 'the dacoit of a different
sort' found that he could neither lift the bundle containing
all the jewels surrendered by the party nor pull out the toe-ring
(the last piece of the jewels) from the 'bridegroom's' toe.
It was then that the Lord uttered, "Oh! Idu nam Kaliyano?"
(Oh! Is this my Kaliya?") and then taking hold of the dear
devotee blessed him with the 'Ashtaakshara' mantra!
This is a much awaited annual feature
as Sri Swamigal, 'playing' the part of 'Perumal' taking
the form of a bridegroom to grace His devotee, adorns Himself
with jewels from head to foot (Earrings, chains and necklaces
round His neck, vankis, bracelets, waist band, tinkling anklets and
a toe ring!) and wears a panchakaccham! A vanamaala -
colourful garland of flower of almost His full height -
is worn by Him. Sri Swamigal wears 'zareed' turban on
His head, 'Thirumann' (as worn by vaishnavites) on His forehead.
The part of Thirumangai Alwar and
his band of dacoits is played enthusiastically by Sri
Swamigal's young devotees.
During the enactment of the episode
Sri Swamigal sang and did 'anukaranam' for Thava kadakshena
sarvam paripoornam, aadadu asangaadhu...
11.30 p.m. - Dolotsavam
Devotees sang "Achanchala Bhaktim Dehi Tava Charane ..."
