Simha Vaahanam

Maahaanyam - Mahaa Aaranyam (Mahaa- large/huge and Aaranyam- forest) This area was once a dense forest and from the stone inscription in the ancient Siva temple in Manimangalam village we learn that Lord Rama, during his exile, spent three days in this forest.

There are about six hundred houses in all in the whole of Maahaanyam village. About 400 houses in Maahaanyam village and 200 in the colony. The colony people are not permitted within the village. The village deity is taken in procession during the annual festival. The deity, however, never steps into the colony but remains at the village boundary. The people come out of their colony to worship the village deity kept at the village boundary.

Initially, there was strong opposition in the village with regard to Sri Swamigal's entry into the colony alongwith His Puja Murthy. However, Sri Swamigal's all encompassing love that sees no difference not only silenced the villagers but also persuaded them to extend their cooperation. There is much festivity both in the village and the colony on this day of Sri Swamigal's annual visit. The affection of the villagers is expressed in various ways. Each house is decorated with huge 'kolams' at its doorstep - most of the houses being thatched huts. The streets are filled with 'kolams' and 'posters' saying 'Guruji Varuga', ' Sri Krishna Varuga', welcoming Sri Swamigal.

Sri Swamigal - Maahanyam Purappadu

At each door the whole family awaited Sri Swamigal's visit, offered him a seat, placed two 'Kuthu Villakus' on either side of Sri Swamigal and conducted simple, loving Paada Puja. One of them, the lady, the man or the child of the family placed the Lotus feet of Sri Swamigal in a big plate and washed them with water. They then smeared 'turmeric' paste and applied 'kumkum' on the two Lotus feet of Sri Swamigal. Flowers were then offered at the Lotus Feet. Invariably every family offered a garland of flowers to Sri Swamigal who wore it around His neck very joyfully. Those who could afford, offered a glass of milk to Sri Swamigal and also to the accompanying devotees.

This annual visit is very eagerly awaited not only by the villagers but also by Sri Swamigal. His anxiety and enthusiasm was seen in His quick, long strides. In the village Sri Swamigal's eyes did not miss even a single 'jiva'. Be it man or animal. Man or woman, young or old, none can escape from His 'Karunaa Kadaksha!' (compassionate look). The eyes moved rapidly here and there searching out the 'victims' for its affectionate blessing!

At every door Sri Swamigal waited patiently until the Paada Puja was completed. There was a hut for every few steps and He stopped at every door and accepted all the garlands, milk, Paada Puja, etc. The youths and little children joined the crowd of other devotees from the Ashram. They, too, chanted Hari', 'Hari' loudly.

In the house of Venkatesan, a worker at the Ashram, there was a separate small tile- roofed room outside the hut in which an idol of Krishna-Radha and Sri Swamigal's picture were placed. A group of children chanted 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna ...' welcoming Sri Swamigal in a befitting manner! Every Sunday children and others gather here to chant 'Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare; Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare'.

Balan, the flower vendor and supplier of flowers to the Ashram usually extends a grand welcome to Sri Swamigal and it was so this time, too. He placed a crown made of fragrant colourful flowers on Sri Swamigal's head, offered a huge flower garland, two 'vankis' made of flowers for both the arms and coloured flute decorated with flowers! Placing Sri Swamigal's Lotus feet on a big plate, he conducted an elaborate Paada Puja covering the whole feet with mound of flowers. 'Uriadi' was played by the local youths. The poles for the 'Uriadi' were decorated with flowers and colour papers.

The young male devotees of Sri Swamigal, Bhagavathars, accompanied by Harmonium and dholki, sang and danced in exuberance. A local village leader conducted Sri Swamigal to every door. Sri Swamigal and numerous devotees, men, women, children of all age groups moved along with Him chanting the Lord's Naama. This was followed by Nadaswaram troupe. Madhuri Sakhi - Premika Varadan mounted on 'Simha Vaahanam' carried by four men, big colourful umbrellas held over the palanquin, a 'Thiruchinnam' on either side, and two men fanning with the colourful decorative fans. The group returned to the Ashram around mid-night. In the 'Bhagavatha Bhavanam' hall Sri Swamigal instructed the Nadaswaram troupe to play the 'Snake-Charmer' tune! And four young men swayed the palanquin in tune with it. This was followed by western notes.
