Swamigal Speaks

<Prev |  Next>

Our scriptures and Purãnas say that the Lord is abound with compassion. My friend says, "I cannot accept that God is abound with compassion, because, he has not fulfilled many of my prayers".

Sri Sri Swamiji:

The owner of a big company runs it by devising various long term growth plans. But the accountant just worries that he gets his Deepavali bonus properly and judges his boss based on that. He does not see that his boss is governing such a big company. In the similar way, the Lord who has created and protects all the living beings in this whole Universe, becomes heartless if his son does not pass in the +2 examination!

What is Dhyãna?

Sri Sri Swamiji:

To avoid hearing unwanted things, we can close our ears. Similarly we can close our eyes to avoid seeing unwanted things. To avoid smelling unwanted things, we can close our nose or move away. To avoid talking unwanted things, we can observe silence. But how can we stop the mind from thinking the unwanted? Can we close it? Or is it possible by moving to a different place? That thought or form by giving which the mind will not think the unwanted is called Dhyãna!

Other religions have only one text as the Holy Text. Why does our religion alone have so many Itihãsas and Purãnas?

Sri Sri Swamiji:

We say, feed the hungry. Instead, if we witness a person crying and undergoing torment due to hunger, or, if such a witness writes a book depicting this factual story and publishes it, it will create a better impact on the readers and force them to feed the hungry. Similarly, the same God who says, "Speak the truth come what may! Lead your life according to Dharma! Be Honest! Do not desire for others' possessions! Do not see another person's wife!", feels that these are not enough and himself comes down to us as Rama and Krishna, and lives according to the Vedas, so that it gets rooted into our hearts. Its nothing but these true stories that are written and published as books by Vãlmiki and Vyãsa!

What are the qualities of a Supreme Guru?

Sri Sri Swamiji:

A person went to the doctor complaining that he couldn't take in any food. When the doctor enquired, he said that he never felt hungry. The doctor prescribed him hunger-invoking pills and now the person started taking food properly. Let us consider a poor person who is hungry, but has nothing to eat. He either begs for food or gets some from eaten plates on the road. Does this not clearly illustrate that it is hunger that is needed to take in food? There is no use if there is no hunger, even if food is in abundance. But if there is hunger, food can be got somehow.

Even though one has digested all the texts about Jnãna, he doesn't attain Jnãna because he is not hungry for Jnãna. One who develops hunger for Jnãna will somehow attain it. Thus even the unlearned become Jnãnis. This goes to show that the quality of a supreme Guru is not explaining Jnãna texts, but inculcating the hunger for Jnãna!
