The Master's Mantra
Sri Sri Swamiji -
A wealthy man who has no appetite seeks out a doctor who gives him medicine to stimulate hunger. On the other hand, a poor man who is agonizingly hungry but has no food or the means to buy one, in desperation, grabs at the leaf with the left over in the roadside dustbin or begs or steals to appease his hunger. It is hunger that pushes one to find the way out. The Sadguru is the doctor who stimulates the 'hunger' that is Bhakti for the Lord. However, hunger can be stimulated even without the help of a medicine. When one repeatedly speaks about the tasty dishes ('payasam' or the 'vada' or the special rice) that he has had it creates the craving in the listener to eat it. In the same way, when the Sadguru repeatedly speaks to you about the glory of the Lord it stimulates Bhakti and you begin to seek the Lord.

The Translation:
Pallavi
Aye! People! Let me, the gypsy from Kuttralam
read the palm for you who look for shortcuts for all!
Charanams
Oh, do not spend money and travel long distances
for, the waters washing the (Lotus) Feet of the
Guru
is verily the Holy Ganga and the Holy Yamuna! Oh, do not wander here and there for atonement of
sins
for, is there anything as sin after br/>
the Guru has
looked at you but once!
Oh, do not be at a loss to know the way to gain
Bhakti
for, consuming the food remains on the leaf
of the Guru
verily develops Bhakti!
Oh, do not be distressed to learn the way to
Liberation
for, it is verily found in
the dust of the Guru’s
(Lotus) Feet!
Oh, your vision would turn inward if only
you would
adhere to all these fourbr/>
And, it is verily boundless Bliss as you move
inward!
Though not desirous of money
would I take leave
empty hand
please do speak a word about me to (your) Guru! |
The Paduka
Sriman Nigamãntha Desikan, a great Vaishnava Saint lived from
mid-thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century- 1268-1369. Of the innumerable
'Granthas' (texts) written by Him
the highly revered and considered as the most extraordinary piece is His
"Pãduka Sahasram" - a thousand verses on the 'Pãduka' of Lord Ranganãtha.
The Saint has in all composed 1008 verses, the last eight apologizing
in all humility for daring to compose these 1000 verses on the Pãduka!
Sri Desikan's contemporary Sri Appayya Dikshitar had written a
commentary on the "Pãduka Sahasram" but unfortunately it has been lost.
Manujatvatirohitena sakye

Oh! Paduke!
Though all-powerful to destroy
the asuras, singly in One Form
the Lord took several Forms
- Bharata, Shatrughna and the rest
with the desire to serve You!
