Swamigal Speaks

Why do some people with devotion today change in course of time?
Similarly, why do people keep changing their spiritual path?

Sri Sri Swamiji:

Just as the flame always burns upward and water flows downward, the minds of all God's creations, from an ant to Brahma, run towards worldly affairs. Such externally turned mind hankers after materialistic pleasures, money, and status in order to satiate its desires. The mind cannot remain steadfast even on these sensual pleasures to which it is attracted. The mind has new and endless wants everyday. Therefore, it is hard to turn the mind towards God. Is it then surprising if such a mind does not remain steadfast on a single path of worship?

The Deities in Temples appear to be mere stones; that is to say, they seem to be insentient things. So, I feel meditation is a better way of worship.

Sri Sri Swamiji:

My goodness! You call the idols insentient! Well! Is your mind a conscious thing? All the objects of this world other than the ‘Consciousness’ (‘Chaitanya’) are insentient, particularly the mind. Divinity (God) in the idol (what you call a mere stone) exists for thousands of years but it is next to impossible to hold God in your wavering mind, even for a second!

I do not understand how one can worship the image of Krishna drawn on a piece of paper!

Sri Sri Swamiji:

Let us say that a man passing through a busy road looks at a beautiful poster of Lord Krishna. He would ignore the picture. Whereas an obscene picture stirring licentious feelings draws a crowd. What is the reason for this? The picture of Krishna was ignored as a mere banner while a huge crowd gathered to look at an obscene picture. Why?

Desire, jealousy, anger and falsehood occupy the mind's surface. A small triggering factor is enough to activate these feelings. But since devotion lies deep within it is hard to trigger devotion.

Since Mahãns are beyond the rajas and tamas dispositions, the devotion in their hearts gets triggered at the least opportunity and they always exhibit signs of devotion.
