A Story for the Children
God's Grace

<Prev |  Next>

A man lived in a forest. He lived by drinking the water from a river flowing in the forest and by eating fruits found in the forest. One day, he picked two stones lying there and rubbed them and noticed fire sparks emanating. Surprised by the sparks, he tried rubbing the stones again and again. When sparks were created amidst dried leaves, they caught fire. He exclaimed, "Ah! This fire can be used" and he roasted the tubers like sweet potato, etc found nearby and they tasted novel and nice.

He realized that his fire can be used for constructive as well as destructive purposes. In a desire to convey this to others, he went to a nearby country a showcased to them, this procedure of fire-creation. They learnt this art from him and astonished others by producing fire using those stones and intended to keep this power a closely guarded secret. Hence they threatened him and banished him from the country.

He went to the next country. He rubbed the stones and showed them how to produce fire. They got the two stones from him and said-"These stones alone will suffice. You please leave from here." They thought-"He produced fire by merely using these stones. So there is some hidden power in the stones. It is enough if we worship this power." They built a temple for the stones and started worshipping it. He moved to the next country saying that it is futile telling these people about fire.

He used the stones and showed the elders of the third country how to produce fire. They could not understand that fire came from the stones. They thought "He has some bizarre power. So when he rubs the stones, fire is produced. If we don't worship him, we might be in danger." Thinking so they drew his picture and started worshipping this image. They said-"If you stay in this country, we might be at risk. We are afraid that you will use your unusual power to destroy us. Hence, kindly leave our country." He left the third country too, and reached the fourth. As earlier he produced fire through the stones. The people there were surprised as well. They looked upon him as an angelic messenger, and as an alien from a different planet. They were trepidated that he has some power and fled. He called them over and over again. No one was even ready to come near him. He went to the next country.

He produced fire using the stones in the fifth country. People of that country welcomed it. They used it for cooking in daily life. They used it to destroy unwanted things. They made pots out of clay, baked it and used them as vessels. They made brick stone out of clay and used it for construction. They melted iron using heat. Thus, they used fire for constructive purposes and making it a part of their daily life, lived happily.

Soon, he passed away. Time rolled by. After one or two centuries one day a Guru traveled to those five countries with his disciples.

In the first country they saw a few people keeping the fire creation art a secret amongst them and intimidating others by creating fire. They all came to the next country. In that country they observed that those fire-producing powerful stones were being worshipped in a temple. In the third country, they saw that a temple had been built for the picture of the man who demonstrated the art of producing fire.

They went to the fourth country. There prevailed a story. "A man came to our country 100-200 years ago. He had something in his hands. He rubbed them. A dangerous light emanated. It cannot be touched or felt." A few believed the story and a few did not.

Next the guru and the disciples came to the fifth country. They saw that the people there had understood the significance of fire and made use of it. The disciples thought- "Why not we explain to the people of the other four countries about the usefulness of fire." They asked their Guru-"Can we go the other countries and tell the people about the significances of fire?"

The Guru said, "Do not go! That task has not been assigned to you. Whatever you say would be in vain". Not heeding to the Guru's words, the disciples went to each country but were mercilessly driven out. On seeing them return in a beaten-up state, the other disciples asked the Guru the reason for this. The Guru said, "Before doing upadesa, one should know how to do upadesa. Even before that we need to have penance and God's grace. Only when there's God's grace people will listen to us."
