The Lord desired to create the worlds and performed penances. By virtue of the penances, he first created snakes. But He repented that the snakes would only cause misery to the world and hence got into further austerities, and created birds. He was still not satisfied and performed more penances. As a result, He discovered some divine Mantras, which gave rise to humans. This fact is mentioned in different styles in the different Vedas.

There are crores of living creatures in this world. The life power is immortal. It is not created by Brahma. Only the bodies for these are created by him. Every living creature possesses two kinds of bodies, the physical body and the subtle body. The physical body is fleeting in nature whereas the subtle body is not. When a subtle body enters the physical body, a living being is said be born. When it leaves the physical body, the living being is pronounced dead.

The Lord did not created human body to start with. In the beginning of creation, he told the souls that he would create an elevated body, and hence created the form of a cow. Seeing the souls still dissatisfied because it was in length, the Lord created the form of a horse. As this was not convincing either, the Lord finally created the human form, which eventually pleased them. The souls entered this form and thus were called "Purusha".

The Vedas say that humans are one of the noblest creations. This is because, all other creatures have only five senses. Only man has six senses. Moreover, only man grows in height, while all other creatures grow in length. Man knows the future, discerns between right and wrong. With the help of this mortal body, he is able to attain the highest immortal state. Thus praise our ancestors. Ãpasthamba (a great Rishi) has praised the human genre. Ãdi Sankara praises human creation in his "Viveka Choodamani". He says, "jantunãm nara janma durlabham" which means, it is rare indeed to be born as a human. Srimad Bhãgavtam speaks about these too. It says that the Lord first created plants, snakes and birds. Unsatisfied, he created the human form and was eventually pleased with the thought that he created a form that could help man attain God.

The Krishna Yajur Veda, Aitreya Upanishad extol human creation. Let us, humans, do good to the world and attain the Lord and enjoy unlimited Bliss!
