A TRIBUTE TO A GREAT SOUL

Smt Jayanti Janakiraman
Founder, "Premika Bhavanam" (The abode of divine love)

In February 2002 we had, under the title "The Magnet that pulled me" published the narration of Smt. Jayanti Janakiraman, the founder of Premika Bhavanam that is the heart center of our Satsang, in coming to meet with her Guru - our Sri Sri Swamiji.
Smt. Jayanti Janakiraman attained the Feet of the Lord on 12th June 2006 after patiently enduring the ordeal of cancer.

Smt. Jayanti Janakiraman
One of the foremost pillars of our Mission, she served her Guru, the Mission and the devotees untiringly to the end. Fair, tall, majestic in bearing, simple, loving and humble in her disposition, she set to tune not just the compositions of her Guru but her life as well. One can imagine the ordeals of a working woman with a family. In spite of her responsibilities as an officer in the Indian Overseas Bank, Chennai, as a mother and a wife, she gladly and lovingly took on the responsibility of opening her home to the Sadguru and devotees.

"PREMIKA BHAVANAM" - ABODE OF DIVINE LOVE - a befitting name to the home that has been open all round the year to the devotees to meet their Guru and enjoy His 'Sangh' (company).

It was in 1992 that Smt. Jayanti Janakiraman and Sri Janakiraman requested, rather pleaded with Sri Sri Swamiji to move into their home, live and conduct Satsang there. The pious, deeply devoted couple had lovingly opened the gates of their home to the Guru and their entire family of Guru 'bhais' and Guru 'behens'. And ever after, it has remained 'Premika Bhavanam' - the Abode of Divine Love! It is a home of 'nitya mahotsav!'

How many have been the Nãmasankirtans performed! How many 'utsavs' celebrated!
How many 'sadas' conducted! How many Mãhans visited! How many Bhãgavatas visited! How many Vedic Scholars visited! The ardent devotee turned her home into a Temple with Satsang. Every day has been a day of 'utsav' and so was it the day she attained to the Lotus Feet of Premika Varadan. There was incessant chanting of Bhagavan Nãma by the devotees of Sri Sri Swamiji, all of whom looked upon her verily as their mother. She quit the mortal coil to mingle with Premika Varadan even as Nãmasankirtan was being performed. All the young male devotees carried the divine body, performing Nãmasankirtan. It was like the 'purappãdu of Thayãr with Perumãl' (Procession of the Lord and His Consort) and strangers including the policemen on the road bowed down in reverence.

For fourteen long years she supplied 'anna' (food --'nivedhya') to Sri Srinivãsa Perumãl, Premika Varadan-Mãdhuri Sakhi, her Guru and her Guru's attendant(s). Any visiting Bhãgavata, Vedic Scholar, Mahãn, Vedic student, was revered and offered food by her.

With a melodious voice, an artful hand, an intelligent brain and above all a loving heart she served the Guru and the Mission in every way - an expert in the rendering of Divya Prabandam, in her final days even while undergoing the ordeals of the dreaded disease, bowing down to the wishes of her Guru, she performed 'upanyãs' (discourse) of Tirumãlai and Srimad Bhãgavatam with the 'Pãsurams' of Ãzhwars as the base.

Her 'touch' is felt and missed in everything - from the 'kolam' drawn in front of Perumãl to singing Sri Sri Swamiji's kirtans, Divya Prabandam, cooking regular and special dishes for Perumãl, tailoring Perumãl's and Premika Varadan-Mãdhuri Sakhi's dresses, curtains for their 'sannidhi', the exquisite beds for Premika Varadan-Mãdhuri Sakhi and innumerable other services. Such was her love for 'kainkarya' (devoted service) of the Lord that even during the period of ordeal she could think of nothing but getting things ready for Perumãl, Premika Vardan-Mãdhuri Sakhi, her Guru and brethren devotees!

Her Guru 'behens' would miss her class whence she patiently and affectionately taught them Sri Sri Swamiji's kirtans and Divya Prabandam.

The glory of Satsang has been witnessed by one and all in this age of mad rushing. Even during the time of ordeal never did she point a finger at the Lord, instead had borne it all bravely saying, 'let it be that I have taken the pains of all in the Satsang!' In her last moment she desired to have darshan of her Guru and it was the Guru she saw last before slipping into a day and a half of unconscious state before shirking the body to attain to the Feet of the Lord! An exemplary life of a 'Bhaktai' and 'sishyai' (devotee and disciple).

If she nurtured any 'desire' it was the conduct of Satsang at Premika Bhavanam. And, Satsang continues at Premika Bhavanam. A year-long 'Srimad Bhãgavata Sapatãha' has begun from 25th June. Srimad Bhãgavata 'patanam' (reading) is done every morning beginning from 6 a.m. and in the evening discourse/Nãma sankirtan conducted for an hour and a half from 7.00 p.m.
