It is common belief that Arutprakãsa Ramalinga Vallalãr who lived in Vadalur did not subscribe to idol worship and that he hailed "Joti" worship (worship of light). I recently happened to read his biography written by M. Balasubramanian titled "Vallalãr Vãzhgirãr".

I was taken by surprise on reading an incident narrated in this book.

Once, in Thirupãdiripuliyur (a Town next to Cudallore), Sridharaswami Nayakar who belonged to Brahma Samaj spoke vehemently against idol worship. Many in the audience were baffled by this. On January 16, 1867 on the banks of River Pennai a few learned men including Sridharaswami Nayakar met(full stop) Vallalãr was also present in this group. People approached Vallalãr and requested him to clear their doubts. Vallalãr spoke in favor of idol worship and was victorious in his debate with Sridharaswami Nayakar.

Further, Vallalãr's definition of the word 'Vigraham' (idol) is pretty interesting. He says that it means 'a special place'. He explained that when the 'Brahma Prakãsam' (Beacon of the Brahman) is transformed into spiritual bodies and installed within idols with Bhakti, in accordance with the prescribed rules, the 'Brahma Prakãsam' manifests easily and showers its grace.

The book also carries the following verses composed by Vallalãr.

He says, "Fearing that the mind would become petty if I stayed in this wealthy city of Chennai, I stayed in the suburbs of the country. Is it possible to put in words the days spent in woods and fields? Oh! Father! Thou art aware of this!" It is interesting to note that even about 150 years ago he has spoken so about life in City (of Chennai)!
