A Story for the Children

<Prev |  Next>

There was a wealthy kingdom in days gone by. There was greenery everywhere.
Once due to failure of rains the kingdom suffered from drought. The forest nearby was also affected by drought. A hunter lived in this forest. He set out for hunt with deep concern of somehow procuring some food for his children. Time passed and he could not find anything.

Sometime later a pigeon came flying near him. The hunter was happy to see the pigeon. Thinking, 'I will catch this pigeon somehow,' very skillfully he caught the pigeon. The pigeon began to speak to him. The hunter was amazed, 'Oh! How can a pigeon speak? How is it that this pigeon speaks?' He thought he would either sell the pigeon at a huge price or use it to perform tricks and earn huge amount and thus become wealthy.

The pigeon pleaded with him to let it free. But the hunter would not let it go.
The pigeon said to him, "I will help you if you would let me go."
The hunter at once asked, "Would you be showing me some treasure?"
The pigeon said, "Do wealthy people enjoy peace? I will give you three instructions for enjoying peace."
The hunter said to the pigeon, "Give me those instructions. I will later decide on letting you free. If I were to let you free now you might fly away."
The pigeon said, "I cannot give instructions to those who have no trust. If you trust me let me go free. I will give my first instruction seated on your hand; the second I would give seated on the tree branch and the third, seated on mountain top."

The hunter thought a while. He decided that it was best to lead a peaceful life. And he let the pigeon free.

The pigeon sat on the hunter's hand and said to him, "One should not take decision on any matter without analyzing."
The hunter thought, "Oh! That's a good instruction."
He then said to the pigeon, "Now, give me the second instruction."

The pigeon flew up and sat on the branch of the tree and said, "Do not think of the lost object/opportunity. Do not cry over it." This instruction also seemed a good one to the hunter.

The hunter asked for the third instruction. The pigeon flew to mountaintop and seated there said to the hunter, "There is a precious gem in my belly. Had you killed me and sold that gem you could have earned a lot of money. You have lost this opportunity."

As soon as he heard this, the hunter began to wail and weep. He could not bear the loss. At once the pigeon said, "Would there be a gem in a pigeon's belly? You believed me without analyzing my words. I have escaped from your hands and flew away. No good can come about by worrying about that gem." Uttering these words the pigeon flew away.

By this, don't we realize that one should not do anything without thinking and having acted so, one should not fret over it?
