The Master's Mantra

Rama Nãmam cholvade...

Sri Sri Swamiji's Song: 'Neelamegha shyamala' tune
1. Rãma Nãmam cholvade Kaliyil gadiyãm!
adaiyum marandãl ado gadiyãm!
2. Rãma Nãmam cholla cholla nanmai perugume! -- nãvum yinikkume!
pãmaran mudal panditan varai punidam ãkkume!
3. Sivanum Pãrvathiyum chollum nãmamãm!
kavalaiyai pokki sãnti nalgumãm!
4. Rãma Nãmam cholli Anuman kadalaith thãndinãn! -- malaiyai thookkinãn!
malai ponra dukkhamum panipol vilagumãm!
5. Rãma Nãmam cholli Sabari mukti yeidinãl!
Nãmamum Nãmiyum veruveru illave illaiyãm!
6. Rãma Nãmam cholvadarkku yenda thadaiyum illaiyãm!
cholla cholla tadaigall ellãm thãne vilagumãm!

The Translation:
1. Chanting the Name of Rãma is the only way out in this Age of Kali!
if one cannot do even this (simple thing) one has no way out at all!
2. Repeated chanting of the Name of Rãma enhances prosperity!
-- sweetens the tongue, too!
it purifies all - from the common man to the scholar!
3. It is the Name that Lord Siva and His Consort Pãrvati chant!
that removes sorrow and bestows peace!
4. Chanting the Name of Rãma, Hanuman crossed the ocean!
-- and, lifted the mountain!
mountain sized sorrows melt away like the fog!
5. Chanting the Name of Rãma, Sabari attained Liberation!
the Name and the Named are not different!
6. there is no barrier for chanting the Name of Rãma!
all barriers are removed as one repeatedly chants the Name of Rãma!

The Paduka
Sriman Nigamãntha Desikan, a great Vaishnava Saint lived from
mid-thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century- 1268-1369. Of the innumerable
'Granthas' (texts) written by Him
the highly revered and considered as the most extraordinary piece is His
"Pãduka Sahasram" - a thousand verses on the 'Pãduka' of Lord Ranganãtha.
The Saint has in all composed 1008 verses, the last eight apologizing
in all humility for daring to compose these 1000 verses on the Pãduka!
Sri Desikan's contemporary Sri Appayya Dikshitar had written a
commentary on the "Pãduka Sahasram" but unfortunately it has been lost.
Avadheerita Sãdhu padhateenãm
alasãnãm madhuvairi Pãduke dve!
yitaretarasãhacharyamittam
pratipanne yiva daivapourushe nah ||

Oh! Twin-Paduke!
You two together guiding us
appears to illustrate to us,
who have
forsaken the ways of Sadhus and are also lazy,
the need for both
Divine Grace and human effort!
