The Master's Mantra
Sri Sri Swamiji -
Our Temples, unlike places of worship of other religions, are not the place meant for dhyãna. Mahãtmas have installed Deities in Temples for people to pour out their worldly woes and get relief from it. Temples are meant for the conduct of 'Utsavs' (festivals) where the Deity is treated like the Emperor. Devotees enjoy taking the Lord in procession with all the paraphernalia. If one desires to meditate, he should go to an Ãshram, the forest, sea shore, mountain side, banks of a river, graveyard, cow shed, etc

The Translation:
I surrender unto
the refuge of Gajendra!
the helper of His genuine servants!
The protector of the destitute!
the rescuer when in danger!
The one who has the son of Vinata as His vehicle!
One who destroys the enemies!
The saviour of the inert and sentient creatures!
The one, worshipped by the matted lock Lord Siva!
The one with lotus-palm
The one who lives in 'tamãla' tree!
The naturally beautiful one!
The embodiment of purity!
The unimpaired Absolute Being!
One who bestows His remembrance in the last hour!
The saviour of the elephant!
The one who holds the Flute in His hand!

The Paduka
Sriman Nigamãntha Desikan, a great Vaishnava Saint lived from
mid-thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century- 1268-1369. Of the innumerable
'Granthas' (texts) written by Him
the highly revered and considered as the most extraordinary piece is His
"Pãduka Sahasram" - a thousand verses on the 'Pãduka' of Lord Ranganãtha.
The Saint has in all composed 1008 verses, the last eight apologizing
in all humility for daring to compose these 1000 verses on the Pãduka!
Sri Desikan's contemporary Sri Appayya Dikshitar had written a
commentary on the "Pãduka Sahasram" but unfortunately it has been lost.
