Swamigal Speaks

Why did Hanumãn not marry in Srimad Rãmãyanam?

Sri Sri Swamiji:

Hanumãn is an embodiment of service. Only when one follows strict discipline of Brahmacharya can he be involved in service for the Lord as he would not be entwined in any relationships and could serve the Lord without any worries. Perhaps, it is just to illustrate this fact that Hanumãn never married!

Can a Mahãtma hide the Siddhi (special powers) acquired by a person?

Sri Sri Swamiji:

Yes. He can. Let us see an incident from Swami Vivekãnanda's life. Once, when Swami Vivekãnanda visited Chennai, one day, he dreamt that his mother passed away. To seek the truth, the people took him to a soothsayer called Govinda Chetty in Valangaimãn. Govinda Chetty said that the fears were not true and thus reduced the burden in Swamiji's mind.

In another instance, Swami Vivekãnanda was given a welcome at Kumbakonam, in which Govinda Chetty was present in the crowd. Swamiji summoned him and asked him to later meet him personally. When Govinda went, Swamiji said, "I very well know that you possess an extraordinary power. It is true that this power brings you fame and wealth. But, when it comes to spirituality you have not progressed even a bit. You stand at the same point you started. Isn't it true? Has your mind had any inclination towards God?" Govinda Chetty recognized that whatever Swamiji said was true. Immediately Swamiji told him, "These powers are useless unless your mind seeks God. Once you taste godly happiness, then these powers would be useless." Saying so, he embraced Govinda Chetty. Surprisingly, from that day on, Govinda Chetty lost all his special powers. He craved for the Lord and led a hermetic life.

Do the spirits of the dead approach the Mahãns and pray to them for deliverance?

Sri Sri Swamiji:

Yes. They do pray for deliverance. Mahãns have too, mercifully blessed them. We can see such instances in the lives of many a Mahãn.
