Chaitanya Mahãprabhu (62)

<Prev |  Next>

Let us now see a few amazing experiences that his devotees have had when Mahãprabhu performed Nãma Kirtan.

Once, after the Kirtan, Mahãprabhu planted a mango seed at Srivãs Pandit's house. As they were seeing it, it started bearing shoots. In a few moments, the shoots grew in size and became a full fledged tree. All the devotees stood transfixed. Instantly, the tree bore ripe fruits. Manaprabhu immediately plucked those fruits and distributed it among the devotees. Everyone was happy to see the huge saffron-colored mangoes. It emenated a divine scent. They received it considering it Prabhu's 'prasad'.

Those fruits had neither seeds not skin. It overflowed with the essence of love. One fruit was sufficient to appease everyone's hunger and they felt like having nothing more. Such a 'mango celebration' took place at Srivãs Pundit's house for twelve months. But the mangoes were invisible to those who did not believe in this; and they did not receive the 'prasad' too. Even today, there stands a place called 'Ãmraghat' in Navadweepa in rememberance of those divine mango fruits.

One day, while performing Nãma Kirtan, the clouds darkened. Seeing such untimely dark clouds, the devotees feared that this would bring rain and impede the Nãma Kirtan. Sensing this, Prabhu roared and the clouds fell apart clearing the sky, thus facilitating continued Nãma Kirtan!

There is yet another incident that surprises not only normal men but also those on the spiritual path making us wonder, "can there be so much love in 'Bhagavat Bhakti' (devotion to God)." The one who is devoted to God will never be allured by parents, wife, children and relatives. They will forsake anything and everything to please their beloved deity.

One day, Nãma kirtan was on at Srivãs Pundit's house. On that day, there was somehow a feeling of divine happiness in the air. Everyone was dancing and performing Kirtan amidst the music from different instruments, forgetting their bodily states. Prabhu joined these devotees and started dancing too. Srivãs Pundit followed suit. Meanwhile, a servant maid insinuated Srivãs Pundit to come inside. Srivãs Pundit went in to see that his son was lying down, suffering from severe fever.

Sachi Mãta and the other ladies were with the child helping him. The condition of the child was deteriorating. Srivãs pundit placed his hands on the child's chest and felt its pulse. Then he looked at the child's face. He understood that the child was breathing its last. Seeing the state of the child, the womenfolk began to cry. Srivãsji emboldened them. Sitting beside the child, he foldled its head gently.

Soon he sensed that the child has ceased to breathe. The life had escaped the mortal coil of the child. The child's mother and the other ladies started crying unbearably. What would be the extent of a mother's grief when her only son passes away? Would her heart not break into a thousand pieces owing to sorrow? Who can stop that cry? Seeing the deceased child, the mother fell unconscious. Seeing this, Srivãs Pundit said, "Look here! Listen carefully! No one should breathe a word! Do you not see Prabhu happily dancing outside? I will go wild if your cry disturbs his happiness. The sorrow caused by impeding his happiness is much more than that caused by the loss of my son! I shall jump into the Ganges and end my life if someone cries and that stops Prabhu's Nãma Kirtan. Understand this!". A 'pativrata' (strict follower of husband's words) as she was, Mãlini Devi digested her tears within herself and sat there silently.

Seeing the silence, Srivãs Pundit said, "What more blessing could this child have? His life departed when Gourãnga, verily the God, is dancing here! What a blessing!"

Mãlini Devi silently listened to her husban's words. Srivãs Pundit came to the hall and continued to dance and sing raising his hands as earlier, as if nothing had happened.

To be continued...
