A Story for the Children Once upon a time, there lived a devotee who meditated, performed japa and poojas with utmost devotion and sincerity. He also lived a righteous and disciplined life. He got the darshan of God, face to face, because he lived a life observing mouna vrita (silence), fast and a life of loneliness. He had a good friend who was disciplined, cultured and honest. But for some reason, he could not accept God. The devotee was upset that his friend, being a good person, did not believe in God. Inspite of the devotee, convincing and advocating on the existence of God, he failed to accept. The devotee was worried, “Despite my insistence and convincing, you fail to believe in God. I wonder when you will start accepting Him.” His friend then replied that if God appeared in front of him, he would then accept. On hearing this, the devotee tried his best to convince God that He has to appear before his friend. God replied, “Many other devotees pray with devotion and sincerity. I do not bless them with my darshan. But you ask me to give my darshan to one who does not believe in me at all!” But the devotee somehow, cried, was stubborn, insisted and took God before his friend. The devotee was excited. He asked his friend, “Now you will accept God, won’t you?” The friend replied, “Though I am an atheist, I have read many spiritual books and listened to many spiritual talks. They have opined that God never appears before an ordinary man. If He has given me his darshan, then He is not God!” -Sri Sri Swamiji
