“How long should one practice sãdhana to attain God?” Sri Swamiji: “In order to convert grains into rice, we put the grains into the mortar and pound it with a pestle. Is it sensible to ask how long we have to pound it? Isn’t it obvious that it has to be pounded until the grains are converted into rice? Similarly, it is but obvious that we have to practice sãdhana until we attain God. However, the Shãstras stipulate a time frame of twelve years for practice of sãdhana.” “Does everyone undergo the same kind of experience during the rise of kundalini?” Sri Swamiji: “No. It could be happen in different ways. It could be similar to the Garuda swooping down on seeing its prey down or it could be akin to the slithering sensation like that of a snake wriggling its way through or like a frog hopping about.” “Do Sãdhaks (those who practice spiritual austerities) undergo different states of experiences?” Sri Swamiji: “While practicing sadhana one undergoes different kinds of experiences apart from divine experiences. This is called ‘sãdhana-avasta’. In the next stage one gets into the state of spiritual madness. This is called ‘siddha-avasta’. The final experience is called ‘Jnãna-avasta’.”
