The Master's Mantra

Sri Swamiji -

  • A man goes out to confront his enemy. In the event he gets hit back. Another man instead appoints a powerful person to fight on his behalf. In this case it is this appointed person who takes the beatings from the enemy and defeats him, as well. Likewise, when we try to fight our enemy-the ‘indriyãs’ (senses), we get hit back. Instead, if we appoint the powerful Lord to fight on our behalf we are not only saved of the ‘hits’ from our enemy but the enemy is destroyed as well. We must, therefore, surrender unto the Lord.

Bãgyodayam mama devadeva..

Raga: Karaharapriya
Tala: Ãdi

Sri Swamiji's Song:

Pallavi

Bãgyodayam mama devadeva
Pãlita charãchara Pãnduranga

Charanams

Tava darshanam nayanãnandam
Tava bhãshanam shravanãnandam
Tava sparshanam paramãnandam
Tava ãlinganam premãnandam

Tvameva mama janakaha
Tvameva mama janani
Tvameva mama sadguru
Tvameva mama swami

Samudrarãja nutha kamalacharana
Sarasa Muralidhara mohana roopa.

The Translation:

Pallavi

It is my fortune, Oh! Lord of Lords!
Oh! Pãnduranga!
The protector of the moveable and the immovable!

Charanam

Your vision is a feast to my eyes!
Your speech is the joy of my ears!
Your touch is the greatest bliss!
Your embrace is the bliss of love!

You alone are my father, mother, sadguru (preceptor) and my Lord too!

Oh! Vittala! One with lotus-feet worshipped by the Ocean-King !
(for you stand on the shores of the ocean in Vittalapuram)!
The one with a charming form holding a flute very elegantly!
(The one whose form captivates the poetic Muralidhara!)

The Paduka

Sri Swamigal's Paduka

Sriman Nigamantha Desikan, a great Vaishnava Saint lived from mid-thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century- 1268-1369. Of the innumerable 'Granthas' (texts) written by Him the highly revered and considered as the most extraordinary piece is His "Paduka Sahasram" - a thousand verses on the 'Paduka' of Lord Ranganatha. The Saint has in all composed 1008 verses, the last eight apologizing in all humility for daring to compose these 1000 verses on the Paduka!

Sri Desikan's contemporary Sri Appayya Dikshitar had written a commentary on the "Paduka Sahasram" but unfortunately it has been lost.

Lebhe tadãprabhruti noonamiyam bhatyãh
Kãntyã kaveratanayã kanakãpagãtvam |
Yãvanmukundapadahemapadãvani! Tvam
Punnyam vibhooshitavatii pullinam tadeeyam || (739)

Oh! Perumãl’s Golden Paduke!
It is certain that only
The day You graced the Holy sands of Cauvery
Whilst the Lord went to her (Cauvery’s) banks
From then on did Cauvery acquire the name
Ponni or Kanapaga!

(Ponni, Kanaka means Gold.)

Chitram sarojanilayãsahitasya shoreh
Vãsochitãni charannãvani! Sanvidhitsoh |
Sadyo chikãsam upayãnti samãdhibhãjãm
Chandrãtapena tava mãnasapangajãni || (740)

Oh! Pãduke!
A wonder indeed!
By Thy moonshine (sheen of your gold)
Thou art blossoming
The hearts of the Yogiis
So that
They may be fit to receive
Perumãl (the Lord)
And
Pirãtti (the Consort)
And retain them there!
