Chaitanya Mahãprabhu (43)

<Prev |  Next>

One night, when Nityananda was on his way to Mahaprabhu’s house, he intentionally passed by the house of Jagayi and Madhayi unmindful of the dark hours of the night. Chanting the Names of the Lord, he slowly approached their camp. Both the brothers were seated on a cot in a drunken state. On seeing Nityananda, they asked sleepily, “Who is that?” Nityananda did not answer. Angered by this, Madhayi shouted – “Hey! Who is that! Why aren’t you answering?”

Nityananda replied fearlessly, “It is me!”. Madhayi asked, “Who are you? Tell me your name? Why are you passing by our house at this hour of the night?”. Nityananda said “I am on my way to Prabhu’s house for Nãma Sankirtan. My name is ‘Avadhooth’.” Madhayi’s anger was roused on hearing this name. “Avadhooth! Avadhooth! This name looks quiet strange! There is no such name as 'Avadhooth'! Are you making fun of us? he shouted. He then indignantly flung a piece of broken pot that was nearby on Nityananda.

That piece struck him on his head and made a deep cut from which blood started flowing profusely. His whole body became red with blood. His robes became red. Even after this incident, Nityananda was not the least angry with Madhayi. He began to sing the Names of the Lord happily. “Prabho! I am not in the least worried that my body is hurt! But I am unable to bear the bad state these Brahmin boys are in! You are the only one who can protect them!” saying thus he danced.

This roused Madhayi’s anger even more. He picked up another piece of the pot to hit at him. What prevailed over Jagayi is not known! He stopped him saying – “Hey! What are you doing! You are behaving so badly towards a Sanyasin! Is it proper to hurt him? This is not right”. Madhayi replied – “Why then is he not telling me his name properly?”. Jagayi said – “What name can a Sanyasi claim as his! You can see that he is an Avadhooth”.

Yet, Madhayi did not calm down. On the other hand, as Nityananda kept dancing in joy, blood flowed profusely from his body and drenched the ground. The frightened on-lookers ran and informed Mahaprabhu of all this. Just then, Mahaprabhu was about to begin the Nãma Kirtan. Prabhu could not bear to hear this condition of Nityananda, whom he loved more than his own life. He hurriedly got up with a jerk and ran to the spot where the incident took place. All the devotees ran behind him with their respective musical instruments.
