“Reading Mira's story makes me apprehensive of doing Bhakti. I fear that by doing Bhakti I would undergo sufferings in life, just like Mira did!” Sri Swamiji: “You will not face any such miseries because you cannot perform Bhakti as Mira did. Therefore, you need not worry.” “When we attain name, fame and status in life we feel happy, deeming it to be the blessings of God. Is it then true that the various sorrows faced in life are also God given?” Sri Swamiji: “When a hungry man approaches us for food we would, if possible, offer food and satiate his hunger. If not, we would tell him our inability. We would, however, not stop it if he were able to secure food by some other means. If this were man’s tendency then would God behave otherwise? If, as per his karma ‘phala’ (the effect of past deeds), a man has to face sorrows but God feels that He should bless him, He would indeed bless him. On the cotrary, if God feels that it is good to let the man undergo the karma ‘phala’ He would do so. God, by Himself, never bestows sorrows on anyone. Some people’s belief that it is God who bestows sorrows is just their assumption. “ “You say that the sole aim of Mahans' avatar is to make everyone attain God and not carry out social service. At the same time you call Swami Vivekananda as an Avatara Purusha. He has carried out many social services!” Sri Swamiji: “In his days, foreigners tried various means such as building schools and hospitals to convert the Hindus. Only in order to arrest this conversion did Swami Vivekanada perform social service. It was the demand of that period of time.” “(How is it that) I, who am moving in spiritual path, face a lot of oppositions!” Sri Swamiji: “Even the completely renounced who embrace ascetic life and perform severe tapas face many obstacles. Don’t we find that in yonder days the Asuras disturbed the tapas of the Maharshis? Do you know the philosophy behind this! Several Asura shaktis (evil powers), i.e. many kinds of evil thoughts, rise up in the minds of those practising tapas and hinder their progress. One should come out of it through Divine Grace.”
