The Master's Mantra
Sri Swamiji -
“When a disciple approaches a Guru with the desire to see Bhagavãn, attain ‘Atma sãkshãtkãra’, he who pushes him away with the
discouraging words, ‘These are unattainable. Do not strive for this,’ is not the Sadguru. Only the one who can lead even the worst sinner
to Liberation is a Sadguru.’

The Translation:

Is there any in the world as handsome as He?(!)
Oh! great men! Come and see (for yourself)! (Is there any in the world)
Charanams
Curly hair that falls down the neck! and
Decorated with a long peacock feather that draws enviable glances!
Broad forehead that wears ‘kasturi tilak’!
Ears with dangling golden earrings throw an invitation!
Oh! the ‘looks’ of (His) eyes causes agitation!
Cheeks that reflect your face!
Sharp nose that heightens His beauty!
‘Kumkum’ (vermilion) red lips bearing the flute! (Is there any in the world)
Round neck bearing holy lines
Bedecked with invaluable ornaments and colourful garland
Chest that is always embraced by Holy Radha
Enticing golden silk clothing
Crossed Feet worshipped by Uddhava
Anklets creating ‘Onkãra nãda’
Standing like a statue He hypnotizes me - if He
Utters loving words - if He
Calls me by my name - if He
Plays the flute - if He
Takes majestic steps - if He
Begins to dance
Oh! Lord! To whom shall I reveal my state?

Premikavarada! He never tires of pouring His compassion
Muralidhara! I do not tire of enjoying Him! (Premikavarada)

The Paduka
Sriman Nigamantha Desikan, a great Vaishnava Saint lived from
mid-thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century- 1268-1369. Of the innumerable
'Granthas' (texts) written by Him
the highly revered and considered as the most extraordinary piece is His
"Paduka Sahasram" - a thousand verses on the 'Paduka' of Lord Ranganatha.
The Saint has in all composed 1008 verses, the last eight apologizing
in all humility for daring to compose these 1000 verses on the Paduka!
Sri Desikan's contemporary Sri Appayya Dikshitar had written a
commentary on the "Paduka Sahasram" but unfortunately it has been lost.
Sambhãvayanti kavayaschaturaprachãram
Manjusvanãm mahitamouktikapatralãngiim |
Svãdhiinasarvabhuvanãm ManniPãduke! Tvãm
Rangãdhirãja-padapankaja-rãja-hamsiim || (847)
Oh! Manipãduke!
The poets sing Your praises!
Seeing
Your gait, melodious sound, the pearls, beautiful white wings,
Your capability to hold all the worlds under Your suzerainty
Praise you as the ‘Royal Swan’!
Rightly are You on the Lotus Feet of the Lord!
You are, indeed, a Swan!
Admiring these traits of Yours
The water birds accept You as the Royal Swan
(Hamsa - Swan is the right representative of the Acharya (Master). The Paduka is our Master. Nammãzhwãr
(in the form of the Paduka) is indeed our first Acharya)
