The Master's Mantra

Sri Swamiji -

  • Somebody shows great affection for us to the extent of making us wonder at his conduct. However, little by little we come to understand that this affection has some motive behind it. Our guess also proves to be right. How sad would it then make us feel!

“The affection shown by him has not been real but with some end behind it,” thus would we realize and grieve.

Likewise, if we behave as if we love God and in the end demand of Him, ‘Give me this! Give me that!’ Would not this show of false devotion sadden God?

Kan chimittii arugil azhaippadeno..

Raga: Kãnnada
Tala: Ãdi

Sri Swamiji's Song:

Pallavi

Kan chimittii arugil azhaippadeno - Kanna

Anupallavi

Ragasiyamo! Alladadisayamo!
Agamum mugamum kulirndu ennai (Kan)

Charanam

Mãyakuzhaludi mayakkiyadu podado!
Ãychiyaradainda Vedanai Ariyeno!
Arinde undan mãya valayil
Vizunden enakkini gathiyedu!

The Translation:

Pallavi

With a wink of your eyes, Oh! Krishna!
Why do you beckon me?

Anupallavi

Is it a secret? (that you like to share with me)
Or is it a miracle? (that you are about to perform)
With a delighted heart and a beaming countenance

Charanam

Is it not enough to have entranced (all) with your magic flute?
Am I not aware of the intense suffering of the Gopiis?
Yet, knowing all these only too well, into your trap,
I fell!
Alas! there is no more way out for me!

The Paduka

Sri Swamigal's Paduka

Sriman Nigamantha Desikan, a great Vaishnava Saint lived from mid-thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century- 1268-1369. Of the innumerable 'Granthas' (texts) written by Him the highly revered and considered as the most extraordinary piece is His "Paduka Sahasram" - a thousand verses on the 'Paduka' of Lord Ranganatha. The Saint has in all composed 1008 verses, the last eight apologizing in all humility for daring to compose these 1000 verses on the Paduka!

Sri Desikan's contemporary Sri Appayya Dikshitar had written a commentary on the "Paduka Sahasram" but unfortunately it has been lost.

Oh! Pãduke!
Nammãzhwãr and You
have both earned the Name
‘Satakopa’
for
You carry the Lord to the streets
so that
even the lowly can worship Him!
and
Nammãzhwãr
through his ‘prabandam’ (the Tamizh Vedas)
has given Him (who is verily the Vedas) to all!

“ Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare!
