Swamigal Speaks

“Do you say that ‘Granthãs’ (Epics) like Srimad Bhãgavatam and Srimad Ramayanam are filled with ‘sãnnidhya’ (Divine Presence)?”

Sri Swamiji:

“Yes! Why should you have any doubt in this regard? The ‘pãrayana’ (recitation) of these ‘Granthãs’ (epics) like Srimad Bhãgavatam, Srimad Ramayanam are done a number of times. We listen to them so many times. In Srimad Ramayanam, when we recite, ‘Hanuman has gone to meet Sita,’ we feel excited. Similarly, while reading Srimad Bhãgavatam we feel the eagerness, ‘Now Prahlad is going to sit on Hriranyakashipu’s lap; Hiranyakashipu is going to question him about the most significant lesson that he has learnt and Prahlad is going to preach the nine types of Bhakthi.’ This eagerness in itself is the proof of the fact that Maharshis have placed their tapas (spiritual power) in these ‘Granthãs’ (Epics).”

“We see that Bhagavãn comes to Bali Chakravarty as Vãmana murti and asks for three feet of land. Thereafter, taking a form that measures the whole world (‘ullagallanda Perumãl’), He takes Bali Chakravarty unto Him. What is the philosophy behind this?”

Sri Swamiji:

“Once, a wealthy person who came to have darshan of Bhagavãn Yogirramsuratkumar, gracing the Town of Tiruvannamalai, told him, “ I am ready to offer you anything I own. If necessary I am willing to offer you every thing that I have.” But, the Mahan said, “I don’t want all your possessions, but I want the possessor.” This is the philosophy of Vãmanãvathar. What is the use if we offer all our possessions to the Lord but do not offer ourselves (surrender unto) to Him? We should offer our whole self to the Lord.”

“Do you say that the Guru blesses a person only once?”

Sri Swamiji:

“No! I don’t mean it that way. I shall explain it with an example. A father has accumulated wealth through hard labour. Let us say that his son asks for some money towards the capital for starting a business of his own. Only if the son multiplies what has been given to him, would the father be happy and help him further. But, if the son loses the capital itself, the father feels, ‘He is not capable of multiplying my hard earned wealth,’ and decides to safeguard his wealth himself.

In the same way, when a Guru does ‘upadesa’ of a ‘Mantra’ to his ‘sishya’(disciple), He gives a part of His hard earned tapas to the ‘sishya’. If the ‘sishya’ does japa of the ‘Mantra’ incessantly, the Guru feels happy and gives him more and more of His tapas. But, if the ‘sishya’ is lazy and fails to do incessant japa of the ‘Mantra’, the Guru decides, ‘Let me protect him with my tapas. When I gave him my divine power he has shown his incapacity to increase the tapas.’”

“Should we immediately fulfill any ‘prãrthana’ (vow to offer/perform something in gratitude for the fulfillment of our prayers) made to the Lord?”

Sri Swamiji:

“Why nurture any doubt in this regard? It should be fulfilled immediately. We should develop the habit of thanking God immediately on our prayers being fulfilled. Fulfilling our vows is a way of expression of our gratitude.”

“I am consumed by some fear even as I go to have the darshan of my Guru. At the same time I also cherish the desire to have His darshan. I am undergoing this kind of a suffering. Why do I feel this way?”

Sri Swamiji:

“There is not even an iota of doubt that Guru and God are the very embodiment of Love. Yet, there should be a feeling of fear towards Guru and God. An innocent child experiences a feeling of fear towards its loving father. Does not the child fear punishment from the father for any wrong committed? Similarly, only if we have a feeling of fear towards God and Guru, we would abstain from doing any adharmic (unrighteous) work. So, one should experience that feeling of fear.”
