Chaitanya Mahãprabhu (41) Soon Haridas said - “Prabho! Sripad Nityananda is very frivolous. You must advice him to restrain this playful nature.” Prabhu asked - “Why! Why! What happened! Why are you both so tired? Tell me!” Haridas replied - “Ignoring my words, Nityananda went to propagate the Divine Names to those two ruffians and when they angrily pounced upon us, he came running like a little child. I fear they will harm us and prevent us from doing Nãma Prachãra.” Prabhu smiled on hearing this and said to Nityananda - ‘Sripad! Why did you go to them? Is it right to play pranks! What is the use of this?” The compassionate Nityananda feigned anger and said, “You must not ask such questions! You are seated safely inside a house. What do you know about the troubles involved in propagating the Nãma in and around the city. On one hand, you ordered us to do Nãmaprachara to all. Having asked us to spread the Names to a Brahmin, a Chandala, a sinner and a pious soul without bias, now you ask us why we went to those two ruffians! They are the deserving recipients of the Name more than anybody else. From my birth, I have renounced everything and have been living on alms. What great merit is there in you having redeemed me? Your divine Names which are capable of uplifting sinners such as Jagayi and Madhayi. Sitting inside the house like this will not help achieve anything. If cruel sinners such as Jagayi and Madhayi are not brought under the refuge of the Hari Nãma and are transformed into devotees, how will the world understand the glory of Hari Nãma?” Mahaprabhu asked with a smile - “Sripad! Who are those devout persons, for whose upliftment you are concerned dearly?” Srivas and Gangadas, who were nearby replied “Prabho! They are not devotees. They are indeed thorns that have grown in the Brahmin clan. They possess cruel qualities true to a demon”. They then elaborated on the cruel activities of Jagayi and Madhayi. Again with a smile, Mahaprabhu said - “How long from now can they indulge in such atrocities! How can they continue to be sinners, when Sripad has given them his Darshan, and about whose upliftment he worries! However great a sinner is, will he not become a devotee if Sripad wishes so?” Pity arises naturally in the heart of Mahatmas (saints). Though Mahatmas grace everyone who pray to them sincerely, in the case of sinners, it is enough if the Mahatma is merciful towards them . That will suffice for the lowly ones to attain salvation. Let us henceforth see how Jagayi and Madhayi were transformed. To be continued...
