Chaitanya Mahãprabhu (42) As a result of the abundant mercy that emerged in the heart of Sri Nityananda regarding Jagayi and Madhayi He wished to reform the brothers who were engaged in heinous acts. And Lo! That very moment the time came for the waning of their innumerable sins. The brothers had shifted their residence to the street in which Mahaprabhu lived from the day they met Nityananda and Haridas. The residents of that street trembled in fear. Everybody anticipated a great danger for those who chanted the Divine Names. They were worried that these demon- like brothers would not let them sing the Divine Names peacefully throughout the night. Those who had not been permitted to attend the Nãma Sankirtan earlier felt happy. They felt relieved-“Thank God! We can sleep peacefully at night”. Mahaprabhu’s house was very near the Ganges. These two brothers had built their tent on the path by which Prabhu went to the Ganges for his bath. Out of fear for these two, people went to the Ganges in groups for their bath. At night nobody stirred out of his or her house. As usual, Nãma Sankirtan took place in the evenings. The chanting of the Divine Names was accompanied by Sruti, drums, Ganjira and other musical instruments. The brothers, who were heavily drunk, lay down outside the house and listened to the chanting. Forgetting themselves, they grunted loudly sometimes. Some other time, they remarked “Aha! Aha!” as though out of appreciation. Sometimes, they danced in tune with the drumbeats. Thus, though they were oblivious of the greatness of Nãma Sankirtan, they felt intoxicated by the mere sound of the Divine Names. By the glory of the Divine Names that entered them through their ears, the cruelty in them started subsiding. One fine morning, these two brothers who woke up very early happened to see Mahaprabhu going towards the Ganges for his bath along with his disciples. They knew that He was the very life-breath of Nãma Sankirtan. The brothers quickly went to Mahaprabhu and said - “Oh! Nimayi Pundit! You sang very sweetly last night. Was that a song of Mangala Chandi? Would you come to our place along with your devotees and perform Nãma Sankirtan? Tell us what articles are needed! We shall arrange everything for that”. Lo! What can be said regarding the glory of Nãma Sankirtan! As soon as they listened to the chanting of the Divine Names, though without any sincere desire, such a drastic change had come upon the boisterous brothers, who knew not how to even speak in a humble and straightforward manner to a person. It is really amazing! But, Prabhu continued to walk in silence without an answer. Later on that day, the devotees approached Prabhu and said - “Prabho! You must surely uplift these two brothers; this is the ideal time for it. Only then will the world realize the glory of Nãma Sankirtan. Your appellation namely ‘Deenabandhu’ (the support of helpless ones) and your glory of purifying the fallen ones would gain eminence only then. Prabhu replied with a smile - “Devotees! Sripad is already concerned about the upliftment of those two about whom you are speaking now and has already given his Darshan, too! He will take care of their welfare.” To be continued...
