Chaitanya Mahãprabhu (51) Once, on hearing the eight slokas of Raghuveerãshtakam being sung with devotion in the sweet voice of Murari Gupta, Mahaparabhu became very pleased and placed his feet on Murari Gupta’s head. Later, He wrote the word ‘Ramadãsa’ on his head. Having received such a blessing from Prabhu, Murari Gupta went home in ecstasy. He asked his wife to serve him food. He mixed the rice served with ghee and fed every person his eyes met with. He also ate large amounts. His wife was surprised at this, but being a Pativrata, she did not comment or say anything. Having thus eaten a lot, he went to sleep. On waking up, the next morning, he saw Mahaprabhu seated in his house. With haste, he got up and prostrated at the feet of Mahaprabhu and asked him the reason for having graced his presence in his residence at such an odd hour. Prabhu said with a smile – “Being a doctor yourself, you have caused a problem to me. Give me some medicine!” Murari asked with surprise – “Prabho! Medicine? For which disease do you want medicine? What has happened to you in one night?” Prabhu smiled. Later he said – “Don’t you know what has happened? Ask your wife, she will say. It was I who consumed all the food that you gave yesterday. It has caused indigestion to me. The medicine for that too is with you only.” Say thus, He drank the water from the tumbler sipped by Murari Gupta. Alarmed upon seeing this, Murari tried to stop him. Before that Prabhu had drunk all the water. With tears of love, Murari fell at Prabhu’s feet crying bitterly. One day Prabhu said to Murari – “Murari! You have captivated Lord Krishna by your extreme love. You have indeed bound Krishna by chords of your love so as to prevent him from loosening it and escaping from you. Hearing this, Murari said –

a sloka of Kuchela from Bhagavatam, meaning “Oh! How great is the Lord’s compassion! Where am I, a poor, wretched and sinful Brahmana! And where is Sri Krishna, who is the abode of all wealth and auspiciousness! Yet, for the only reason that I have been born in the holy caste of the Brahmanas, He embraced me ! Krishna’s causeless mercy is the reason for this! Prabhu, too enjoyed hearing such a timely and appropriate reply of Murari Gupta. Let us further look into the experiences of Advaitãcharya. To be continued...
