The Master's Mantra

Sri Swamiji -

  • One who has embraced true Bhakti yoga will ever be engrossed in performing kirtans, puja, dhyana, Katha pravachanam (discourse), Katha sravanam (listening to the stories of Bhagavãn) and ‘kainkarya’ (service to the Lord and Sadhus).

Unnai pãdatha nãvinãl payanundo..

Raga: Karaharapriya
Tala: Ãdi

Sri Swamiji's Song:

Pallavi

Panduranga! Panduranga!

Charanams

Oomaiyãi sevidãi kurudãi
Yeththanayo per thavikka
Iththanai Arul seidum
Unnidam Bhakthi illayey !

Nãvinãl un nãmam pãda vendum
Manadinãl unnaiye ninaikavendum
Endrum unakkey sevai seiyya vendum
Engum edhilum unnaiye kãnavendum
Muralidharanukku idaye arulavendum.

The Translation:

Pallavi

Oh Panduranga!
Futile indeed is that tongue
which does not sing Your Divine Name!

Charanam

When there are so many who suffer
Being dumb, deaf or blind!
Inspite of being blessed by You with many things
I am devoid of Devotion!

Oh! Panduranga!
Let my tongue relish singing Your Divine Name!
Let my mind be ever immersed in Your thought!
Let me always Serve You!
Let me perceive Your Presence in each and everything!
I beseech Your blessings for this alone!

The Paduka

Sri Swamigal's Paduka

Sriman Nigamantha Desikan, a great Vaishnava Saint lived from mid-thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century- 1268-1369. Of the innumerable 'Granthas' (texts) written by Him the highly revered and considered as the most extraordinary piece is His "Paduka Sahasram" - a thousand verses on the 'Paduka' of Lord Ranganatha. The Saint has in all composed 1008 verses, the last eight apologizing in all humility for daring to compose these 1000 verses on the Paduka!

Sri Desikan's contemporary Sri Appayya Dikshitar had written a commentary on the "Paduka Sahasram" but unfortunately it has been lost.

Lebhe tadãprabhruti noonamiyam bhatyãh
Kãntyã kaveratanayã kanakãpagãtvam |
Yãvanmukundapadahemapadãvani! Tvam
Punnyam vibhooshitavatii pullinam tadeeyam || (739)

Oh! Perumãl’s Golden Paduke!
It is certain that only
The day You graced the Holy sands of Cauvery
Whilst the Lord went to her (Cauvery’s) banks
From then on did Cauvery acquire the name
Ponni or Kanapaga!

(Ponni, Kanaka means Gold.)

Chitram sarojanilayãsahitasya shoreh
Vãsochitãni charannãvani! Sanvidhitsoh |
Sadyo chikãsam upayãnti samãdhibhãjãm
Chandrãtapena tava mãnasapangajãni || (740)

Oh! Pãduke!
A wonder indeed!
By Thy moonshine (sheen of your gold)
Thou art blossoming
The hearts of the Yogiis
So that
They may be fit to receive
Perumãl (the Lord)
And
Pirãtti (the Consort)
And retain them there!

“ Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare!
