Chaitanya Mahãprabhu (32)

<Prev |  Next>

Nityananda would tease the youngsters on the streets. He would loudly chant the Names and dance along with them. He would make monkey-faces and grunt. The alarmed children would run in fear to hug their mothers. If the mothers scolded him for this, he would reply – “Say Krishna ! Krishna ! Why do you strain your tongue to speak other words!” Later, he would sing the Mahamantra very sweetly. The angered ones would be pleased in no time.

He would go near ladies without hesitation and plead – “Mother! I am your son! You must listen to your son’s request. You must chant at least once the Divine Name and lend me joy. When the ladies listened to this simple and innocent request, they would be pleased and would sing the Divine Names.

Later in the evening, both of them would discuss the events of the day and about the propagation of Hari Nãma. Mahaprabhu would feel extremely happy and would encourage them. Both indulged in their mission of spreading NãmaSankirtan to the extent of forgetting their meals and sleep. Thus, Mahaprabhu’s fame started spreading slowly. The people who came to have his ‘Darsan’ increased in number. If He happened to step out into the street, all the onlookers fell at his Feet. They offered various things with great joy. The poor, rich, women, men, fools and scholars, all of them without distinction prostrated before Mahaprabhu with respect and joy.

The young boys, on their way to Patashala / school, would loudly perform Hari Kirtan as they walked. The cowherds followed their cows singing the sweet names of Hari. The pilgrims sang Hari Nãma as they went to take bath in the Ganges. During festive occasions, ladies gathered and performed Hari Kirtan. Thus, every nook and corner of Nawadweepa vibrated with the loud chanting of Hari Nãma such as

“Krishna Keshava Krishna Keshava
Krishna Keshava Pahi Mam !
Rama Raghava Rama Raghava
Rama Raghava Raksha Mãm !
Raghupathi Raghava Raja Ram !
Pathitha Pavana Sita Ram !

Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Hare Hare !

Sri Krishna Govinda Hare Murare !
He ! Natha Narayana Vasudeva !

To be continued...

“ Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare!
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare !"
