The sons of Rishabha Yogi - Kavi, Hari, Anthariksha, Prabuddha, Pippalãyana, Ãvirhotra, Drumila, Chamsa and Karabhãjana (also called as Navayogis) - who were great devotees, at the sacrifice conducted by the King Nimi -

The king now addressed Pippalãyana, “Oh ! Greatest among the knowers of Brahman! May you be pleased to tell me what constitutes the nature of Brahman the Inifinite which is also called as Lord Narayana !”

The sage Pippalãyana said, “Oh King! Know Lord Narayana to be the One without a cause and the cause of creation, sustenance and dissolution of the universe. Know that principle which shines forth in all the three states of waking, dream and sleep and also shines forth in samadhi, to be none other than Lord Narayana. He is the cause for the actions performed by the body and mind. Just as a spark from the fire cannot illumine the fire, so also the mind, body, senses or prãna cannot illumine the Infinite Brahman. This Brahman is the root of all Upanishads. It is also said that this very Brahman appears as the Prakriti (made of rajas, tamas and sattva) and through them as the world. This Brahman has neither birth nor growth. It neither diminishes nor undergoes destruction. Lord Sri Narayana is verily the form of knowledge. Being all pervasive and present during all times like the air, he takes various forms owing to the power of Maya. Just as there is a continuous flow of prãna in everybody so also the self (Atman) exists even in deep sleep. During deep sleep the senses and even the mind are dissolved and then it is the Self-alone, immutable and of the form of Bliss, that shines forth. The memory of happiness during sleep is the evidence of the fact that such happiness has been experienced in that state. When the mind due to extensive devotion to the Lotus feet of the Lord, does not rise up, it gets purified and in that clear mind the effulgent self (Atman) is intuited.
