Chaitanya Mahãprabhu (32) During the times of Mahaprabhu, there lived in Nawadweep two Brahmin boys named Jagayi and Madhayi, who engaged themselves in very cruel acts. For quiet some time their atrocities continued. Considering themselves to be uncrowned kings of the village of Nadiya, they indulged in all sorts of acts that led to a man’s downface and ruin. The Lord himself declares in Srimad Bhãgavatam, the typical causes that bring destruction upon man.
Yatha Deveshu Vedeshu Goshu vipreshu sãdhushu |
When a man nurtures hatred for the Devas, the Vedas, the cows, the Brahmins, the Sãdhus, the righteous acts and Myself, he gets destroyed very soon. Jagayi and Madhayi hated all the above mentioned. They never went to temples. Though they were Brahmins by birth, they had not the least knowledge of the vedas. They ate flesh and injured the saintly people. Pundits and Brahmins, who were very orthodox, trembled at their very sight. Their livelihood consisted of theft, murder and molesting ladies and they spent most of their time in intoxication. Despite possessing a house on the bank of the Ganges, they never lived in it, but set up tents for every ten or twenty days in every street and made merry there. The innocent people living in those colonies gave them whatever they demanded, trembling out of fear. Thus they both came to be known everywhere for their barbarous acts reminding the days of Ravana, Kamsa, Shishupala and such others. One day, when these two, in a drunken state with reddened eyes, were walking with faltering steps and blabbing something like mad men, Sri Nityananda and Haridas came that way. On seeing them, Nityananda asked the nearby persons who they were. The residents of that colony informed them about their unruly character and warned them not to get into any problem by entering into a conversation with those two. Nityananda felt a causeless mercy spring in his heart for the two brothers. He thought – “If people who are all very devoted to the Divine Name start chanting the Names of the Lord upon our request and advice, that does not really highlight Prabhu’s glory. It is not extraordinary and special if sinners such as these two shed their bad character, start chanting the Divine Names and surrender themselves at the feet of Mahaprabhu. Only then will the true magnificence of the Divine Name become evident. We must extend our grace and mercy only towards such persons. These two are indeed fit recipients for the initiations of the Divine Names. Somehow, they need to be elevated.” To be continued...
