Thus spake the Bhaktãs
(From Srimad Bhãgavatam)
THE GOPIS:
“Kurvanti hi tvayi ratim kushalãh sva Aatman
nityapriye patisutãdibhirãrtidaih kim
tannaprasiida parameshwara mã sma cchindyã
ãshãm britãm tvayi chirãdaravindanetra” || (10:29:33)
“Oh! The Lotus-eyed One!
scholars are devoted to Thee
who are the ‘Atma’ of all
of what use are husband and children
who are no joy but only trouble to us?
Be Merciful! Oh! Lord!
do not ruin the long cherished desire for Thee
that has taken deep root!”
UDDHAVA:
“Konviisha te pãdasarojabhãjãm
sudurlabhoartheshu chaturshvapiiha |
tathãpi nãham pravrinnomi bhooman
bhavatpadãmbhojanishevannotsukah” || (3:4:15)
“Oh! Lord!
Is any of the four ‘purushãrthãs’
- Dharma, Artha, Kãma and Moksha –
difficult to attain
by
those who have taken refuge in Thy Lotus Feet?
yet,
I cherish not
any desire for these
I am solely interested in
serving Thy Lotus Feet!”
PRAHLAADA:
“Naivãtmanah prabhurayam nijalãbhapoorno
mãnam janãdavidushah karuno vrinniite |
yad yajjano bhagavate vidadhiita mãnam
tacchãtmane pratimukhasya yatha mukhasriih” || (7:9:11)
“The Lord, self-fulfilled due to innate Bliss, does not seek the worship of the small-minded people. Yet, HE accepts the puja of the people due to His Mercy for them. Moreover, just as the mirror reflects the adornments on the face, so too, does the puja performed to the Lord return to the worshipper as blessings.”
DHRUVA:
“Bhaktim muhuh pravahatãm tvayi me prasango
bhooyãdananta mahatãmamalãshayãnãm |
yenãnjasolbannamuruvyasanam bhãvabdhim
neshye bhavadgunnakathãmrutapãnamattah” || (4:9:11)
“Oh! The Infinite One!
Bless me with
the association of Sadhus
who
of pure mind
constantly do Bhakti unto Thee!
Drinking in the
Nectar of Thy ‘gunãs’
in their company
effortlessly shall I
cross over this ‘samsãra’
filled with trials and tribulations!”
“Te na smarantyatitarãm priyameesha martyam
ye chãnvadah sutasuhridgrihavittadãrãh |
ye tvabjanãbha bhavadeeyapadãravinda-
sougandyalubdhahrudayeshu krutaprasangãh” || (4:9:12)
“Oh! One who holds the Lotus in the navel!
those embracing Thy devotees
intoxicated with the fragrance of Thy Lotus Feet
they
think not even of
their body, children, friends,
home, wealth and women!”
LORD BRAHMA:
“Ya ekavarnnam tamasah param ta-
dalokamavyaktamanantapãram |
ãsãnjchakãropasuparnnamena-
mupãsate yogarathena dhiirah” || (8:5:29)
“We take refuge in Him
who is
of the form of Knowledge!
untouched by ignorance!
unseen!
beyond time and space!
and whom
the Wise
worship through Yoga!”
KUNTI:
“Vipadah santu nah shashwattatra tatra Jagadguro |
bhavato darshanam yasyãdapunarbhavadarshanam” || (1:8:25)
“Oh! Master of the world!
it is during dangerous hours
are we Blessed with
Thy Presence!
let then such perils
which would force Thee to rush to us
befall us ever!
Thy very darshan
redeems one
from this transmigratory existence!
BHEESHMA:
“Svanigamamapahãya matpratijnãm-
mrutamadhikartumavapluto ratasthah |
dhrutarathacharannoabhyayãcchaladaguh
Haririva hantumibham gatottariiyah” || (1:9:37)
“Oh! Lord!
Thou had vowed not to touch any weapon
while assisting the Pandavãs (in their war)
yet,
Thou broke that vow
to fulfill my pledge
of making Thee take up a weapon!
Oh! Lord!
in the guise of helping Arjuna
Thou alighted from Arjuna’s chariot
and
taking up Thy Discus
rushed at me,
just as the Lion rushes at the elephant!
the whole earth
shook with Thy strides!
and
Thy upper garment fell down!
laughing, I struck Thee with arrows
Thy chest armour broke
and
Thy whole body bathed in blood
though stopped by Arjuna
Thou came rushing at me, as if to kill me!
Oh! Krishna!
Thou of that battlefield
are my sole refuge!”
“Lalitagativilãsavalguhãsa-
prannayaniriikshannakalpitorumãnãh |
kritamanukritavatya unmadãndhãh
prakritimagan kila yasya gopavadvah” || (1:940)
“Let my mind
delight in Him
whom the Gopis,
blessed with
majestic strides, Lila, smile and love-lorn looks
had their minds fastened to Him
and
performing ‘anukaranna’ (enacting His doings out of/in deep passion)
of His Lilas
entertained no other interests
and
finally attained to ‘Paramãnanda roopa’” (Oneness with Him).
VRITRASURA:
“Ajãtapaksha iva mãtaram khagãh
stanyam yatha vatsatharãh shudhãrtãh |
priyam priyeva vyushitãm vishannã
manoaravindãksha didrukshate tvãm” || (6.11:26)
“Oh! The Lotus-eyed!
My mind seeks Thee
Just as
the fledglings restlessly await their mother
the bound calves await milk from their mother’s udder
and
the faithful, ‘cupid struck’ lady awaits her long separated husband!”
BALI:
“Aho prannãmãya kritah samudhyamah
prapannabhaktãrthavidhou samãhitãh |
yallokapãlaih-tvadanugrahoamaraih-
labdapoorvoapasadeasurearpitah” || (8:23:2)
“Oh! Lord!
Thou bestow Thy Grace
on the surrendered
yet,
Thou hast bestowed such a Grace
that is rare even for the Devãs
on me (!)
the meanest of Asurãs
who has worshipped Thee not
but have just endeavored to
prostrate to Thee!
amazing is the glory of
prostration to Thee!”
GAJENDRA:
“Ekãntino yasya na kanjchanãrtam
vãnjchanti ye vai bhagavatprapannãh |
atyadbhutam tatcharitam sumangalam
gãyanta ãnandasumadramagnãh || (8:3:20)
“I sing HIS glory
whose glorious and
auspicious deeds
the surrendered,
the great Bhaktãs
sing
and
remain drowned in
the ocean of Bliss!”
“Tamaksharam Brahma param paresham
avyaktamãdhyãtmikayogagamyam |
atiindriyam sookshmamivãtidooram
anantamãdyam paripoornamiidde” || (8:3:21)
“Oh! Thou!
The Imperishable! The Brahman! The Lord of Lords!
The Unmanifest! One attainable only through spiritual union (Bhakti)!
The Unperceivable (by the mind and the senses)!
The Subtle! One so near (being the Self of all) yet appears afar!
The Infinite! The First Principle! The Perfect!”
NAAGA PATNIIS (Serpent-wives):
“Anugrahoyam bhavatah krito hi no
dandohasatãm te khalu kalmashãpah |
yad dandashookatvamamushya dehinah
krodhoapi teanugrah eva sammatah” || (10:16:34)
“Indeed! a Blessing on us
is punishment meted out by Thee!
his sins are annihilated
on whom
Thou inflict punishment!
the sin that has brought about
snake birth for this Kaliya
stands eradicated now!
Thy anger is indeed
a Blessing,
for,
have Thee not
placed Thy Feet on his head!”
“Kasyãnubhãvosya na deva vidmahe
tavãnghrirennusparshãdhikãrah |
yadvãcchaya shiirlalanãcharattapo
vihãya kãmãn suchiram dhritavratã” || (10:16:36)
“Rare indeed
is the contact of the dust of Thy Feet!
for securing that dust of Thy Feet
even ‘Sri’,
abandoning all desires
performed tapas for long!
we know not
through what meritorious deed
has this Kaliya
received such glory filled
dust of Thy Feet!”
“Na nãkaprishttam na sãrvabhouman
na pãrameshtyam na rasãdhipatyam |
na yogasidhiirapunarbhavam vã
vacchanti yadpãdarajapprapannãh” || (10:16:37)
“Those who have attained
the dust of Thy Feet
care not for
the heavens, emperorship,
the seat of Brahma, sovereignty of Rãsatala
yogic powers, nor
Moksha!”
