A Story for the Children

<Prev |  Next>

Once, a sailor thought of going by his sailboat to fish in the sea. It was an evening and it became dark. Usually sailors when they go into the sea, take some heavy object to balance the boat.

This sailor too searched for something with which he could balance the boat. Finding a sack nearby, he opened it in the dark and examined its contents by putting his hand into it. He could feel pebbles inside and so he tied the sack into a bundle and put it in his boat for balancing. After fishing, he was returning in the mid-night. He was happily singing and was playfully throwing the stones one by one into the sea.

When he reached the shore, it was almost mid-night. Very few stones were left in the sack. He went home and after a good night’s sleep opened the sack to see what were in it at dawn. And Lo! He fainted after seeing the few stones that were left for they were not mere stones but priceless gems! He became mad brooding over his folly.

We are all indeed like that sailor! Every moment of our life is so precious. But we are throwing away our precious days in wasteful ventures such as quarrelling, sleeping and indulging in unwanted activities. Only when we become old do we realize the value of time. But alas! What is the use then ?
