From this issue we begin a new series of the dialogues that Smt. Jayanti Janakiraman, an ardent devotee of His Holiness Sri Sri Swamiji has with Him and is published in the Tamizh monthly magazine of the Mission, Madhuramurali, under the title

“Madhuramãna Mahaneeyar”
(March 1999)

Recently, while talking to Sri Swamiji, He said, “The sins or merits of their actions do not affect Mahatmas.”
On hearing this I questioned Him, “You have many a time said that one has to face the consequence/fruit of any act done in the world. It is true that in the view of a Jnãni there is no such thing as sin or merit. In the same way it is also true that a Jnãni who has annihilated his mind is not the doer of any act though he appears to act. When it is so, what will happen to the fruit (sin or merit) of these karmas (acts)?”

While elucidating on this, our Sri Swamiji said, “Mahatmas will not involve in any sinful act. They may perform innumerable merit earning work. If there be any fruit of sinful karma with them it would reach those who abuse them and the merits reach those who love and respect them.”

He then put a question, “Do you know why Krishna Bhaktãs (devotees of Krishna) are very happy and do well?” and offered the answer, too.
“The best of all ‘punya karma’ (merit earning deed) in the world is ‘Go-samrakshana (protection of cow). Since, Bhagavãn Gopal (Krishna) held ‘Go-samrakshana’ as His primary duty all through His life, He had accrued great merits. Since, He is verily the Brahman (‘poorna Brahma sanantana’) these merits do not matter to Him. Since they reach all those who worship Him, all Krishna Bhaktãs are happy and do well.
He has in Him such great ‘punya phala’ (merit) that it can take care of the welfare of any number of Bhaktãs who may come to Him.”
