The Translation:
Of what avail is a Bhajan
sung without devotion?
Futile, indeed, is a Bhajan
devoid of devotion!
Not only a waste
but also
brings harmful results
is
a Bhajan, performed
proudly, bereft of interest
with pomp and show
with a motive to gain money
(A Bhajan)
Requires not knowledge of Raagaas!
enough is it, if performed with heart soaked in love!
rid yourself of likes and dislikes
and
sing Radha’s Beloved!
On the path shown by great Bhaagavataas
dance and sing the Praises of the Lord -
worshipped even by the Vedas!
earning deathless boon
attain to the permanent Abode!
without hurt lend your ears
to the words of Muralidhara!

The Paduka
Sriman Nigamantha Desikan, a great Vaishnava Saint lived from
mid-thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century- 1268-1369. Of the innumerable
'Granthas' (texts) written by Him
the highly revered and considered as the most extraordinary piece is His
"Paduka Sahasram" - a thousand verses on the 'Paduka' of Lord Ranganatha.
The Saint has in all composed 1008 verses, the last eight apologizing
in all humility for daring to compose these 1000 verses on the Paduka!
Sri Desikan's contemporary Sri Appayya Dikshitar had written a
commentary on the "Paduka Sahasram" but unfortunately it has been lost.
“Aham upari samastadevataanaam-
Upari mamaisha vibhaati vaasudevah |
Tadiha parataram na kinchid asmaad-
Iti vadasiiva Padaavani! Prannaadaih || (397)
Hey! Paaduke!
with your music (‘naada)
You proclaim -
“I AM above all the devas who bow down to Me!
and
above Me is Vaasudeva!
thus,
there is none above Him!
verily the Highest is HE!”
