‘Ãchãrya Nishta’
(One-pointed devotion to the Guru)

Durga Charan Nag (Nag Mahashay), one of the famous household disciples of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, was very dispassionate. Though a householder he lived a life of an ascetic. He possessed immense love for his Master Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa once advised him, “Eat whatever you get by the grace of the Lord. It will do no harm.” From then, Nag Mahashay ate only the food that had been offered to the Lord. He also avoided sugar and salt in order to kill the desire to eat tasty food. He found pleasure in abiding by his Master’s words.

Once when Nag Mahashay visited Dakshineshwar to have his Master’s Darshan, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa asked Sashi (later known as Sri Ramakrishnananda) to prepare some food for Nag Mahashay. Nag Mahashay was then fanning his Master. Once the food was ready, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa asked Nag Mahashay to have his food. Nag Mahashay too obediently went to have his food. Though he was seated before the food, he did not touch it. If Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa had taken this food, it would have become ‘Prasad’ and Nag Mahashay desired to eat only such Prasad. But neither did he voice his wish nor did he touch the leaf plate! Seeing this, Sashi informed Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa about Nag Mahashay’s refusal to even touch the plate. Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa immediately ordered Sashi to bring the plate to him and having taken a part of the food returned it to Sashi and said, “Now ask him (referring to Nag Mahashay) to have his food”. Knowing that his Master had partaken the food, Nag Mahashay joyfully had his food. Since his Master had touched the leaf plate, he did not stop with eating the food alone, he ate the plate as well! Such was his Guru Nishta!
