Sri Swamiji     The Master's Mantra
Jaya Jaya mangalam Sri Guro!... (Sri Swamiji's Song)
    The Paduka

The Master's Mantra

Sri Swamiji -

  • Grace is not an act! Guru pushes the externally turned mind of his disciple inward. And again the Guru pulls such inwardly turned mind from within and fixes it in the ‘hrudaya staana’ (spiritual heart). This is verily Guru’s Grace. Grace is not an act! To the extent of the disciple’s faith and devotion in the Guru, the Grace of the Guru reaches the disciple, even without the Guru’s consent! What cannot be attained through sadhana can be attained through Guru’s Grace. Such is Guru’s Grace!

Jaya Jaya mangalam Sri Guro!...

Raga: Surruti
Tala: Ãdi

Sri Swamiji's Song:

Jaya Jaya mangalam Sri Guro!
Jaya Jaya mangalam SatGuro!

Kamala vilochana Sri Guro!
Karunya moorthey Sat Guro!

Paavana chartra Sri Guro!
Patithoddhaaraka Sat Guro!

Bhagavata priya Sri Guro!
Paramadayalo Sat Guro!

Mangala charana Sri Guro!
Muralidhara nutha Sat Guro!

The Translation:

Oh! Guru!
Victory and auspiciousness unto Thee!
Oh! Sadguru!
Victory and auspiciousness unto Thee!

Oh! Guru! With lotus-like eyes!
Oh! Sadguru! Mercy personified!

Oh! Guru! Of untainted character!
Oh! Sadguru! Redeemer of the down trodden and fallen!

Oh! Guru! The Lover of the devotees of the Lord!
Oh! Sadguru! Manifestation of compassion!

Oh! Guru! With auspicious Feet!
Oh! Sadguru! Worshipped by Muralidhara!

The Paduka

Sri Swamigal's Paduka

Sriman Nigamantha Desikan, a great Vaishnava Saint lived from mid-thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century- 1268-1369. Of the innumerable 'Granthas' (texts) written by Him the highly revered and considered as the most extraordinary piece is His "Paduka Sahasram" - a thousand verses on the 'Paduka' of Lord Ranganatha. The Saint has in all composed 1008 verses, the last eight apologizing in all humility for daring to compose these 1000 verses on the Paduka!

Sri Desikan's contemporary Sri Appayya Dikshitar had written a commentary on the "Paduka Sahasram" but unfortunately it has been lost.

I prostrate
  Unto that Paduka
Who is friendly to the Lord’s Feet,
  The enemy of Madhukaitapaas
(If one has the ‘kataksha’ of the Master all power is earned)
The Devas lose their spirit, and,
  Fear as if
Their power would be lost in a trice
  When someone bears ‘IT’
  On his head
  With devotion!
