The Magnet (that pulled me)! (Tamizh Madhuramurali, July 1996)

I first heard of His Holiness Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji from my friend Sri Nandakumar, also a devotee of His Holiness.

Drawn by Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharishi, I used to frequent Tiruvannamalai and perform ‘Giri pradakshina’. I used to do ‘paaraayana’ of Maharishi’s grantaas.

Once, I went to Hyderabad in connection with my office work. There, while visiting the Birla Mandir I happened to lay my hands on a book on Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharishi. I found the following incident narrated in it:

“A person performed sadhana deeming Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa as his Guru. But, he felt that if only he could attain to a living Mahatma as the Guru it would help him progress in his sadhana. At this time his friend spoke to him about Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharishi of Tiruvannamalai and advised him to have His darshan.

This sadhak went to Tiruvannamalai to have Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharishi’s darshan. On entering the darshan hall, his joy knew no bounds on seeing Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa’s picture near the Maharishi.”

This incident created a deep impression in me. I thought, ‘if only I could also attain to a living Mahatma as a Guru!’

Within a few days I received a letter from my friend Nandakumar. In it he wrote about His Holiness and advised me to have His darshan without fail. On my first visit to have darshan of His Holiness, He was all alone. His Holiness first spoke to me about Bhagavan Ramana! This not only surprised me but also made me happy.

Gradually, every action and talk of His Holiness drew me unto Him.
