Sri Swamiji

A Story for the Children

<Prev |  Next>

Once upon a time, there lived a Guru with several disciples. He was a real Guru of a high order and thus expected his disciples to be highly disciplined, dispassionate and possess all virtues. He struggled hard to make his disciples so. He gave several spiritual instructions to his disciples regarding meditation, yoga, japa etc.
He instructed them thus- “To have the vision of God is our goal. During the course of our sadhana, we might acquire some ‘siddhis’ (supernatural faculties). But, we must be careful not to be deluded by them; we should also not put such powers to use and should not be proud of having attained such powers. We must also be careful not to be carried away by visions that one might get during the course of spiritual sadhana.”

Though instructed severally in this manner by the Guru, one of the disciples could not stop himself from desiring ‘siddhis’. This disciple wanted to acquire several ‘siddhis’ and wished to attain great fame by exhibiting them to the people. But, the Guru would not let him go astray.

Once, this disciple went on a pilgrimage whence he met another swamiji. This swamiji, too, had several disciples. Further, he possessed several ‘siddhis’. He attracted people using these powers. The disciple felt fascinated with this swamiji.
He asked the swamiji, “ Will you kindly teach me all these ‘siddhis’?”
The swamiji replied, “Leave your Guru and come to me. I shall teach you all that I know.”

The disciple went back to his old Ashram and collecting his bag and baggage started out from there. On seeing this the Guru enquired, “Where are you going?”
The disciple told him all about the other swamiji and his decision to accept him as his new Guru. In reply, the Guru said, “ Look here, my child! I have the responsibility of your spiritual life on my shoulders. Therefore, I must ensure that you are taking the right decision. So, I will come in person and hand you over to the new swamiji.”
Though the disciple was much against this, the Guru accompanied him to the new swamiji

The swamiji, on seeing his new disciple with his old Guru fled from the scene. The Guru, however, began to chase the new swamiji. The reason was that this swamiji was an old disciple of this Guru! He had attained some ‘siddhis’ and had moved away from this Guru. Now, the Guru on seeing him said to him, “You wanted to escape from me, eh? I have been hunting for you for quite a long time. Now you have been caught!” Saying so, the Guru took this new swamiji also to his Ashram!
