There lived a youth named KalyanaBrahmachãri, in a village called Vidyanagar near Puri. He was a steadfast devotee of Sri Krishna. He always contemplated on the divine Plays of Sri Krishna and lived happily in spite of being poor.

In the same village there lived a wealthy old man who had a big family. Knowing the greatness of Vrindãvan, the place where Sri Krishna had performed innumerable lilas (Divine Play), he wished to visit the place at least once during his life time. He informed his sons about his desire and asked one of them to take him to Vrindãvan. Those days, traveling was not that easy. There were no modern transport facilities available. One had to travel only by foot. So, it would take months for one to reach Vrindãvan.

His sons refused to take him since they were busy with their jobs and did not wish to quit the jobs for the sake of the pilgrimage. They said, "If you wish you could get someone else to accompany you to Vrindãvan." The old man was pondering over it when it suddenly struck to him that the youth KalyanaBrahmachãri might accompany him. He approached him and said, " I strongly desire to visit Vrindãvan. You are poor and suffering a lot. If you accompany me to Vrindavãn I'll provide you food and other facilities." KalyanaBrahmachãri's happiness knew no bounds. He had not even dreamt of getting such an opportunity to visit Vrindavãn, which was the place where his beloved Krishna had performed innumerable lilas. He was thankful to the Lord for showering His grace on him and agreed to undertake the pilgrimage.

Both of them set on foot and reached Vrindãvan after several months. At Vrindãvan they enjoyed visiting all the places where Sri Krishna had performed lilas. While at Vrindãvan, the elderly man fell ill and was bed- ridden. KalyanaBrahmachãri, served him patiently and lovingly to the extent that even his sons would not have done. Slowly the elderly man recovered his health. He was very impressed by the youth and so thankful for his services that he was bent upon doing something for him. He said to KalyanaBrahmachãri, " I can not repay your services, for they are invaluable. So I promise to marry my daughter to you." KalyanaBrahmachãri replied, " Sir, What have I done? Any kindhearted man in my position would have done the same. I don't expect any return from you for my services." But the old man refused to accept this and said, "I vow this to you having Sri Krishna, who lives here at Vrindãvan, as a witness. I will certainly get my daughter married only to you."

Once they were back in town, the old man talked to his family about the journey, about how KalyanaBrahmachãri had taken utmost care of him during his illness and about the promise he had made to him. But everybody at home opposed his idea and said, "We can give him some money but certainly not our girl. That would affect our status in society." The elderly man with nobody to support him could not go against their wishes and so kept silent.

Knowing the situation at the home of the elderly man, KalyanaBrahmachãri informed about the elderly man's promise to the people of the village. He said, "I am not asking his daughter's hand because I wish to marry her, it is only because the elderly man had promised it having Sri Krishna as a witness. If he now goes back on his words, he would incur a great sin.". Hearing this the villagers asked, "You say that he had Sri Krishna as witness. Can you bring Sri Krishna here as your witness and prove your words?"

KalyanaBrahmachãri, in order to prove their question set on foot to Vrindãvan again to bring Krishna. Reaching Vrindãvan, he prayed fervently to Sri Krishna and asked him to accompany him as a witness to his village. He then started off to his town. As a mark of Sri Krishna's presence, he could hear the melodious notes of the flute and the jingling of the Lord's anklets when he was walking back to his town. Once he reached the town, all these sounds stopped. He told the villagers that Sri Krishna had indeed come for giving witness. The people gathered around to conduct the case. When KalyanaBrahmachãri walked towards the court, the sound of flute and anklets resumed. When the elders of the court asked where the witness was, at that very instant a beautiful statue of Sri Krishna appeared there from nowhere. The whole village was taken aback. The people at home of the elderly man too were very impressed and accepted to give their girl's hand to KalyanaBrahmachãri.

At the place were this incident took place, there is beautiful temple for Krishna. He is named as "Sãkshi Gopalan"("Sãkshi" means witness).
