‘Ãchãrya Nishta’
(One-pointed devotion to the Guru)

<Prev |  Next>

The following incident has been described in the book about Vaishnava Order of Gurus.

A Mahan called Nampillai, discoursed frequently about the glory of the Guru. Once he was sailing along with his disciples on a boat across the river Cauvery. It was dark and raining hard. Cauvery was flooded with the heavy downpour. The boatman said, "I am afraid that the boat might plunge into water due to the excess weight. If someone who knows swimming can jump out of the boat and swim across thereby reducing the mass on the boat, the rest of us can sail to the shore safely. Otherwise everyone of us will have to drown." No one was ready to jump into the flood. At that moment a devout lady, who did not know swimming, addressed the boatman, "May you live blissfully for a hundred years! Please take my Guru safely ashore." and jumped out of the boat. The boat too reached the shore safely. Once ashore, Nampillai was looking out for the lady worriedly said, "What happened to the devout lady who jumped out of boat for our sake!" Hearing the words of her Guru, the lady said, "Swami! I am right here standing over a rock. You need not worry about me!" Turning to the direction of the voice and seeing the lady, Nampillai was very happy and sent the boatman to fetch her ashore. Reaching the shore she addressed Nampillai, " Swami! It was You who saved me from drowning into the flood.". Nampillai too said, "If that is your belief, so be it!"

Giving up even their lives is trivial and insignificant for those who have totally surrendered unto their Guru!
