Sri Swamiji     The Master's Mantra
    Azhaikkindrãn kannan Srivaname..(Sri Swamiji's Song)
    The Paduka

The Master's Mantra

Sri Swamiji -

  • A boy thinks of his mother - how she used to care for him, how on every occasion she would prepare certain dishes for him, etc. Similarly, friends think of each other. They recall the loving acts of their dear and near ones. In the same way one should be in Guru bhava. Recall all that He has done for us. Anything seen around us should in some way or the other remind us of Him. To think of the Guru/God like this is ‘Bhakti’ (devotion). One should forever be in such thoughts. Read Prahlada’s, Dhruva’s lives. God has been their protector. It is full of Guru Prabhãva (the glory of Guru).
Thenambakkam near kancheepuram is (Lord) Dakshinamoorthy ‘sthala’ (place). Once, Periyava spent some days there in Dakshninamoorthy ‘bhãva’. There was no ‘chalana’ (movement) in Him. He had Himself become Dakshninamoorthy!

  • Man should certainly maintain cleanliness of his hands though he may not keep the other parts of his body clean. Is it not with these hands that he touches the Lord and performs abhishekha and puja?

Azhaikkindrãn kannan Srivaname..

Raga: Kãnada
Tala: Ãdi

Sri Swamiji's Song:

Azhaikkindrãn kannan Srivaname
Azhaikkindrãn kannan kuzhaloodi

Kettilaiyo neengal Mattilla Ãnandame
Tattãmal selven Thadai solladeer yãrum

Vanna mãlaiyum unnada vadivazhagum
En chithathai mayakkudadi

Pattu Thirumeniyai katti Thazhuvidave
Ullam maruvudadi - Sakhiye

Ethanai solliyum Puriyumo Ivan azhagu
Ennai pithanãkki pãrpathe vilaiyãttu.

SRI SWAMIJI

The Translation:

Beckoning is Krishna! to Vrindãvan
Beckoning is Krishna! playing on His flute!

Have you not heard of the unbounded bliss?
without fail shall I go! Pray! do not stop me!

The colorful garlands, the splendid beauty of His form
spellbinds my mind!

Oh! friend! to embrace the soft silken divine body
does the mind crave!

Can any amount of words extol His beauty?
Lo! making me mad (for Him) is indeed a play ( for Him)!

The Paduka

Sri Swamigal's Paduka

Sriman Nigamantha Desikan, a great Vaishnava Saint lived from mid-thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century- 1268-1369. Of the innumerable 'Granthas' (texts) written by Him the highly revered and considered as the most extraordinary piece is His "Paduka Sahasram" - a thousand verses on the 'Paduka' of Lord Ranganatha. The Saint has in all composed 1008 verses, the last eight apologizing in all humility for daring to compose these 1000 verses on the Paduka!

Sri Desikan's contemporary Sri Appayya Dikshitar had written a commentary on the "Paduka Sahasram" but unfortunately it has been lost.

Bhãsa svayã bhagavato Manipãdarakshe!
   Muktãnvita maratakopalapaddhatiste
Nityãvagãhana saham sakalasya jantoh
   Gangãnvitam janayatiiva samudramanyam || (563)

The sloka in Sanskrit

Oh! Manipãduka!
   You are verily the Ocean
with the beauty of your green gems
generating a likeness to the Ocean
and
   the lines of beads
reminding the gush of the white Ganga
  unlike the Ocean water*
You can indeed be worshipped daily!

*the usual ocean water can be resorted to only on Full and New Moon days.

“ Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare!
