Sri Swamiji     The Master's Mantra
Avyãja karuna moorthi tvameva krishna... (Sri Swamiji's Song)
    The Paduka

The Master's Mantra

Sri Swamiji -

  • “A landlord works in his land himself. He ploughs the land and plants variety of flowering plants, to make it a beautiful garden. ‘This piece of land should become a garden and it should be filled with flowers’ - this is the only thought and aim of the landlord. If the landlord employs a labourer for work, the focus of the labourer would be greater on getting money than seeing the garden blossom. ‘When will this work reach completion? What would I be paid for this work? Or won’t I be paid for this work?’. These would be the thoughts of the labourer. In the same way, the minds of those who do ‘bhakti’ to seek God, will always long to see Him. But the minds of those who do ‘bhakti’ for worldly pleasures will always tend to think of the benefits that they would get for their ‘bhakti”.

Avyãja karuna moorthi tvameva krishna...

Rãga: Mohanam Tal: Adi

Sri Swamiji's Song:

Pallavi

Avyãja karuna moorthi tvameva krishna
Kritagnatã nãsti kinchidapi mama.

Charanams

Bahu samasyeshu bahu vidhameva
Rakshito-aham pakshi vãhana
Kshanamapi na smarãmi tava karunãm
Sancharati manaha lokasukeshu

Kãmi aham bhogi aham
Raktho-aham gopala
Charanakamalam vina tava
Gatirme nãsti gopala

Arthãrthi aham baddho-aham
Ahankãrena abadhavachano-aham
Virakthajana vinuta vrajarãja suta
Lajjita Muralidhara poojita pada.

The Translation:

Oh! Krishna!
Thou art the embodiment of causeless Mercy!
not an iota of gratefulness do I possess!

Many a time and in many ways
Oh! PakshiVãhana (One who travels on Garuda)!
Have Thou protected me!
But, not for a moment do I think of Thy compassion,
Immersed as the mind is in the mire of worldly pleasures!

Full of desires am I, enjoyer of earthly pleasures am I!
Oh! Gopãla! attached am I to them!
(Though I am so low please do not abandon me)
I have no other refuge, Oh! Gopãla!
Other than Thy Lotus Feet!

Bound am I to this Samsara by the cords of desires!
(Though totally unaware of Thy Glory)
I blabber about Thee out of mere ego sense!
Oh! Son of king of Vraja!
Oh! One!
Worshipped by dispassionate devotees
(like Prahlada, Narada, Parashara, Pundarika, Vyasa, Ambarisha, Shuka, Saunaka, Bhishma, Rukmãngada, Arjuna, Vashishta,Vibheeshana)!
Oh! One whose Lotus Feet
Is also worshipped by ‘lajjita’* people like me!

*feeling ashamed to worship as I lack these devotees’ dispassion!

The Paduka

Sri Swamigal's Paduka

Sriman Nigamantha Desikan, a great Vaishnava Saint lived from mid-thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century- 1268-1369. Of the innumerable 'Granthas' (texts) written by Him the highly revered and considered as the most extraordinary piece is His "Paduka Sahasram" - a thousand verses on the 'Paduka' of Lord Ranganatha. The Saint has in all composed 1008 verses, the last eight apologizing in all humility for daring to compose these 1000 verses on the Paduka!

Sri Desikan's contemporary Sri Appayya Dikshitar had written a commentary on the "Paduka Sahasram" but unfortunately it has been lost.

Sambhavatu Pãdarakshe!
Satyasuparnnãdiroupavãhyaganah: |
Yãtrãsu rangabhartuh
Prathamaparispandakãrannam bhavatii || (320)

Hey Pãduke!
(Lord) Ranganãtha on His tour
May have umpteen number of vehicles –
Satya, Supama, Garuda, etc. –
But, it is YOU the Lord looks
For placing His Feet first!

“ Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare!
