Swamigal Speaks

<Prev |  Next>

“Swamiji!, You keep saying often that worshiping the Lord by singing the divine works of Mahãns, namely, ‘Prabandams’, ‘Thevãram’, kirtans, etc. would reap great ‘phala’(fruit). You also say that the ‘pãrayana’ or reciting of the divine works of Mahãns would reap great ‘phala’. What is the reason for this?”

Sri Swamiji:

“Some people may desire to compose a song or write a book. So they start singing or writing about God. But Mahãns always desire to describe the qualities, form and Mercy (‘kãrunya’) of the Lord. Hence, they have composed numerous songs and books. Moreover Mahãns place the powers obtained through their tapas in their ‘grantãs’(books) and songs. Hence, reciting them or singing them will give good ‘phala’.”

“I do mantra japa. An acquaintance says that mantra japa should always be done along with ‘nyãsa’. Is ‘nyãsa’ required ? You have not asked me to do that?”

Sri Swamiji:

“If the objective of mantra japa is acquisition of worldly matter, then ‘nyãsa’ is required. ‘Nyãsa’ is not required if the objective of mantra japa is to seek God or liberation.”

“Quite frequently I observe ‘mouna vritha’ (silence). Is it good to observe this? What are the days that are auspicious to observe ‘mouna vritha’?”

Sri Swamiji:

“Anyone who is very talkative by nature cannot get his mind to concentrate. ‘Mouna vritha’ will improve concentration of mind and Will power. Observing ‘Mouna vritha’ during ‘moola nakshtra’ (the day when star Moolam is on the ascent), the day that is very auspicious for Goddess Saraswathy, would be good.”

“Why is it that sometimes, the actions of Mahãns go against the Shãstras? ”

Sri Swamiji:

“If the doer of a particular act is a ‘tapasvi’ (a person who performs intense spiritual practice) or is an ‘Avatara Purusha’, the act is accepted by the Lord though it goes against the Shastras. But an ordinary man should not take such acts as examples set by them. For example, Rama performing funeral rites for Jatayu as is done for humans and Adi Sankara performing funeral rites for his mother in spite of being an ascetic, fall under this category. ”
