Swamigal Speaks

“In the life history of Thondaradipodi ãzhwãr we find Bhagavan Sri Ranganãtha visiting Devadevi’s (a dãsi) house as a messenger for the sake of the Ãzhwãr. How is this?”

Sri Swamiji:

“In the same manner, in the life history of Sundaramoorty Nãyanãr we find Bhagavãn visiting the house of Paravai Nãchiyãr for the sake of Sundara. This is a ‘kãma’ (lust) supported by Bhagavãn. Likewise, Sage Durvãsa’s anger, Sage Narada’s troublemaking were also supported by Bhagavãn. All these are Lilas played for the welfare of the world and preaching a moral (‘needi’) to the world.”

“While Kamsa did not desire to kill the first born of Vasudeva and Devaki why should Narada incite Kamsa to kill the child?”

Sri Swamiji:

“Bhagavãn’s Avatar takes place only at a time whence adharma (unrighteousness) lifts its head and atrocity spreads in the world. Narada provoked Kamsa to commit such atrocity only so that Bhagavãn gets angry and comes down to the earth soon. However, Narada’s troublemaking ended only in good.”

“If securing food is only by the Grace of God then will I get food without working for it?”

Sri Swamiji:

“None can refute that one has to work for obtaining food. But, to swallow the food thus obtained or digestion of the food requires God’s Grace. This is because the three - Atma, God and Guru are one and the same. It is only due to the presence of Atma Chaitanya (Consciousness) that one sees, walks, hears, swallows, cries, laughs and the food taken is also digested.”

“ It is said that solitude helps in spiritual progress. A friend of mine always remains behind closed doors of his room in solitude. He does not speak to the others in the family. Will he achieve spiritual progress easily?”

Sri Swamiji:

“If a person remains alone in a room reading newspapers, listening to the radio, watching television it cannot be called solitude. Solitude means bringing the mind to one point without involving in any kind of activity. Being in such solitude and performing sadhana will only lead to spiritual progress; instead, just remaining alone in a room will not lead to spiritual progress.”
