YOUR NEXT DATE (SWATHI) is on November 4th, 2002!

Sri Swamiji     Ucchishtam
    Deepa jyothiyai varuvãi - shravana..(Sri Swamiji's Song)
    The Paduka

Ucchishtam
Leaf - 25

The 'Ucchishtam' of the Guru is His Words/Upadesas!

Sri Swamiji -

  • God created all the things needed for the survival of man and also created Man. Why did God create Man? Only so that he (Man) would do bhakti to Him (God) and attain Jnãna. Man has not only failed to do bhakti but on the contrary involves himself in forbidden actions that appear to mock at God’s ‘srishti’ (creation).

Deepa jyothiyãi varuvãi - shravana..

Raga: AanandaBhairavi
Tala: Ãdi

Sri Swamiji's Song:

Pallavi

Deepa jyothiyãi varuvãi - shravana

The Translation:

Pallavi

Hail! As the light of the Sravana deepa - Oh ! Venkatesha
One residing in Tirupati Tirumala hills!

Charanams

Hail! as the Light!
Oh! Lotus-eyed Venkataramana (one who dwells with joy in the Venkata hills)
One who destroys all sorrows and bestows blessings! Hail! as the Light!
Oh! The bestower of boons in this Kaliyuga!
One who resides on top of the hill as the essence of all the Vedas!
One praised in all the worlds! Hail! as the Light!
Oh! The dark cloud-hued one who pours compassion!
One who bestows auspiciousness and growth of lineage! Hail! as the Light!
Oh! Kãmadhenu!
Oh! Kalapakavruksha!
Oh! Muralidhara enjoyer of Sãma gãna! Hail! as the Light!

The Paduka

Sri Swamigal's Paduka

Sriman Nigamantha Desikan, a great Vaishnava Saint lived from mid-thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century- 1268-1369. Of the innumerable 'Granthas' (texts) written by Him the highly revered and considered as the most extraordinary piece is His "Paduka Sahasram" - a thousand verses on the 'Paduka' of Lord Ranganatha. The Saint has in all composed 1008 verses, the last eight apologizing in all humility for daring to compose these 1000 verses on the Paduka!

Sri Desikan's contemporary Sri Appayya Dikshitar had written a commentary on the "Paduka Sahasram" but unfortunately it has been lost.

Udagrayantrikãm vande Pãdukãm yanniveshanãt |
uparyapi padam vishnoh pratyãdhista prasãdhanam || (801)

I prostrate to the
Pãduka
which has an upward turned knob
The Lord
places His (Lotus) Feet
on the Pãduka;
the knob provides embellishment
on the upper side;
just as
the Pãduka does below!
thus,
no other ornament is required!

Prabhavam pratirudhya kantakãdeen
  bhavatii shouripadãmbujãdadhastãt |
charanãvani! dhãrayatyamushmin
  uchitacchãyam* uparyapi prateekam || (802)

Oh! Pãduka!
remaining below the (Lotus) Feet
You forcefully destroy
the thorns in the path
while
the knob, above
offers shelter and
confers charm too!

*chãya means shadow and charm.
