Ucchishtam
Leaf - 20
The 'Ucchishtam' of the Guru
is His Words/Upadesas!
Sri Swamiji -
“We find that a man blessed with all comforts in life remains drowned in liquor, in spite of many
things of joy in the outside world. This is proof enough that joy earned from ‘within’ is greater than
that earned from ‘without’!”
“Coffee tastes bitter, in spite of containing sugar, if drunk after eating some sweet dish. Likewise, one
who has experienced the great joy of Bhagavat darshan is unable to enjoy worldly matters. The
experience of the one who says that he enjoys Bhagavat darshan even as he enjoys worldly matters
is a mere bluff!”

The Translation:
Pallavi
I meditate upon the Vãnara (Hanuman)!
Who traverses the sky!
Charanams
One who holds the
Sanjeevini Mountain and the mace!
The immortal One
Who grants the desired boons!
One with a fidgety tail
Adorned with a bell!
Verily the epitome of all auspiciousness!
Who bestows the same wherever he goes!
One who has won over his senses!
And travels/moves at the speed of mind!
Son of Pavana(The Wind-God )!
Who experiences horripulation due
To Bhãva (ecstasy)!
One who punishes the evil and
Removes all obstacles!
The dear Lord of
Eminent Muralidhara!

The Paduka
Sriman Nigamantha Desikan, a great Vaishnava Saint lived from
mid-thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century- 1268-1369. Of the innumerable
'Granthas' (texts) written by Him
the highly revered and considered as the most extraordinary piece is His
"Paduka Sahasram" - a thousand verses on the 'Paduka' of Lord Ranganatha.
The Saint has in all composed 1008 verses, the last eight apologizing
in all humility for daring to compose these 1000 verses on the Paduka!
Sri Desikan's contemporary Sri Appayya Dikshitar had written a
commentary on the "Paduka Sahasram" but unfortunately it has been lost.

Oh! Pãduka!
True it is
That
Your padmarãga radiations
Provide a tender surface
To the
Sensitive Feet of the Lord!
But,
IT is verily
A deluge fire
That dries up the ocean of sins!

Pãduke!
You appear
Near the ocean of charm,
In Sri Ranga,
As an opened out
Oyster-shell
Emitting out pearls!
You are by the ocean of lavanya (charm)
Ordinary oyster-shells are by the ocean of lavana (salt)!
