Ucchishtam
Leaf - 18
The 'Ucchishtam' of the Guru
is His Words/Upadesas!
Sri Swamiji -
A Vedantin does ‘upãsana’ (worship) of himself as verily Krishna. Here, it is not the
bhãva of a Bhakta but it is the bhãva of Bhagavãn! One should feel such deep ‘oneness’ in this bhãva. Here, Bhagavãn does not mean (‘tãtparya’) that he has attained the power of ‘srishti’ (creation), ‘stiti’ (sustenance) and ‘samhãra’ (destruction) but has compassion (‘karuna’), clemency (‘kshama’) and inexplicable Love (‘aneervachaneeya premai’) towards all creatures (‘jivas’)! Once all these are attained, he earns Shakti automatically. These qualities are the only basis. One should become ‘complete’ having attained ‘Peace’. One should ever be in the experience of ‘swaroopa jnana’ (the real Self). Only this is Bhagavãn’s swaroopa (form).
Bhakti shows Bhagavãn. But, where does one find Bhakti? In Bhagavãn? No! Not in Bhagavãn! In temples? No! Not in temples! Only in the company of a Bhakta!

The Translation:
Pallavi
Come, Oh! Lord of Sri! on your own and stay in my heart
Leave not even for a second!
Charanams
Oh! Hari!
Devoid am I of any sãdhana or bhãva(expressions of devotion)!
Dependent am I solely on thy Grace!
Oh! One with a beautiful face just like the Moon!
Oh! Black hued Lord! bearing the Shanka and the Chakra!
Oh! One with splendor whose form exceeds the beauty of hundred crore Manmathas!
Oh! One worshipped by Muralidhara! the admirer of thy Lovely Feet!

The Paduka
Sriman Nigamantha Desikan, a great Vaishnava Saint lived from
mid-thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century- 1268-1369. Of the innumerable
'Granthas' (texts) written by Him
the highly revered and considered as the most extraordinary piece is His
"Paduka Sahasram" - a thousand verses on the 'Paduka' of Lord Ranganatha.
The Saint has in all composed 1008 verses, the last eight apologizing
in all humility for daring to compose these 1000 verses on the Paduka!
Sri Desikan's contemporary Sri Appayya Dikshitar had written a
commentary on the "Paduka Sahasram" but unfortunately it has been lost.
