Sri Swamiji     Ucchishtam
    Kannan engal mannavan...(Sri Swamiji's Song)
    The Paduka

Ucchishtam
Leaf - 16

The 'Ucchishtam' of the Guru is His Words/Upadesas!

Sri Swamiji -

  • A snake bites if one goes close to it, while a scorpion stings. If hit by a stone a dog chases the person and bites him, which is also poisonous. For all these, a person needs medical aid. The wild animals like lion and tiger attack and eat up man. But one cannot say how a man would react if another were to hit him. He may run away in fear, hit back in anger, offer a friendly smile or just ignore. One cannot for sure say how he would react. One knows the behaviour of all living beings but not that of man! Human behaviour alone is unpredictable!

  • A man who writes a competitive examination for employment desires to know what his salary would be. He does not enquire about the responsibilities that he would have to shoulder in the firm. Man is always interested only in his own gain.

Kannan Engal Mannavan...

Raga: Brindãvana Sãranga
Tala: Ãdi

Sri Swamiji's Song:

Pallavi

Kannan engal mannavan
Sarva loka nãyakan

Charanams

Mayiliragai anindavan kayilainãthan panibavan
Thugilai thandhu kãthavan mugilai otha menian (Kannan)

Eedu inai attravan veru thunaiyum vendumo
Thedi nãdi sendru nãm ãdipãdi maghizhuvom (Kannan)

Murali gãnam endrume Mukundan varavai sollumme
Siram panindu vananguvom yetrram migakkolluvom (Kannan)

The Translation:

Pallavi

Krishna is our Lord!
The Lord of all lokas!

Charanams

He sports a peacock feather on his crown.
The Lord of Kailas (Lord Shiva) too bows to him.
He was the one who saved Draupadi (Draupadi’s self- respect) by bestowing clothes.
His complexion resembles the dark clouds.

He is peerless!
Do we need any other’s protection? (Any one else’s support other than Him?)
Let us search and seek Him!
Let us dance and sing in joy!

The music from His flute always announces His arrival.
Let us bow our heads before Him and elevate ourselves!

The Paduka

Sri Swamigal's Paduka

Sriman Nigamantha Desikan, a great Vaishnava Saint lived from mid-thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century- 1268-1369. Of the innumerable 'Granthas' (texts) written by Him the highly revered and considered as the most extraordinary piece is His "Paduka Sahasram" - a thousand verses on the 'Paduka' of Lord Ranganatha. The Saint has in all composed 1008 verses, the last eight apologizing in all humility for daring to compose these 1000 verses on the Paduka!

Sri Desikan's contemporary Sri Appayya Dikshitar had written a commentary on the "Paduka Sahasram" but unfortunately it has been lost.

Oh! Pãduka!
Flowers offered at
the Lotus Feet of the Lord
is later found on
the heads of the devas!
So, too,
praises showered on
You
are verily the praises
showered on
the Lord’s Lotus Feet!

The Lord
who performs the three-fold role (of creation, sustenance and destruction)
places His Holy Feet (that measured the Universe)
which generated the holy Ganga
and
was borne on his head by Lord Siva
into the Pãduka
only after washing them!
I cling to such
Holy Pãduka
(that is holier than the Holy Feet)!

“ Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare!
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare !"
