“Any deed executed by ‘athi ãshramiis’ (Jivan Muktãs) does not affect them. That is, the Shastras say that Jivan Muktas are not doers even though they have performed an act. Is it then possible for such Mahatmas to be involved in ‘adharmic’ (non-virtuous) deeds?” Sri Swamiji: “While even ‘dharmic’ thoughts do not rise in such Mahatmas how can they involve themselves in ‘adharmic’ deeds? How then can such a question arise at all?” “Advaitis contend that the world has been born out of Brahman just as a tree has grown from a seed; that the Brahman has changed into this world just as milk has changed into curd. But, when a tree grows out of seed only the tree remains; the seed is not seen any more. When milk turns into curd, only curd remains and milk ceases to exist. Similarly, if the world has been born out of Brahman or if Brahman has changed into the world, only the world should exist. The Brahman should cease to exist. Is that not so?” Sri Swamiji: “When a mother begets many children both mother and children continue to exist. When several lamps are lit from a single lamp, the ‘moola’ (primary) lamp also continues to exist along with other lamps. Likewise, the Truth (‘Satyam’) is that the Brahman exists even after the world has been born out of it or even after the Brahman has changed into world.” “You advocate that only Nãmasankirtan is the way to attain Liberation (‘Moksha’). Many Mahatmas have shown this path. Why then should we protect the Vedas? What is the need for learning the Vedas?” Sri Swamiji: “In our day-to-day life we approach a lawyer to know the right and wrong. Based on ‘Social law” he points to us the right and the wrong. Only the Vedas are the ‘pramãna’ (proof) for the existence of God. The Vedas are the ‘Eternal law’ that show the right path to a man who desires to reach God. Therefore, only by following the path shown by the Vedas can one have ‘darshan’ (see) of God. If by any chance the Vedas die, then there would be no base to demark the right from the wrong. Several ‘durmathas’ (wrong faiths) would spring up and only confusion will prevail. Namasankirtan is also a way advocated by the Vedas. Hence we follow this path.” “How can a common man know if one would, after death, attain a higher plane or return to this earth?” Sri Swamiji: “The common people of this world generally entertain feelings such as ‘kãma’ (desire), ‘krodha’ (anger), ‘bhaya’ (fear), ‘asooyai’ (avarice), ‘banda’ (attachment) and ‘pãsam’ (affection). But, these are found in very small proportion in some while Mahans do not entertain such feelings at all. If one entertains these feelings even at the time of his death he only deserves to return to this world! Therefore, he would be reborn on this earth. Those who possess very little of these feelings reach planes as per their nature. And the Mahans who do not have any of these feelings become verily the Brahman!” “Some advice meditating in the place between the eyebrows just above the nose. What is the philosophy (‘tãtparya’) behind this?” Sri Swamiji: “ ‘Vãranãsi’ is the junction between the eyebrows known as ‘Varana’ and the nose known as ‘Nãsi’. ‘Vãrayati’ means ‘to stop’. Since, the very meditation on the point between the two eyebrows stops one from committing sins, the eyebrows are known as ‘Varana’. Since, the very meditation on the root of nose annihilates one’s sins, the nose is called ‘Nãsi’ (that which annihilates).”
