Swamigal Speaks

“While doing japa or dhyãna I experience a trembling in my body. What is the reason for this?”

Sri Swamiji:

“I do not know if you are performing japa-dhyãna in the right way. Do your japa with the help of a proper Guru. Even while performing japa-dhyãna in the right way such trembling is experienced in the body. This is a sign of cleansing of the ‘nãdiis’ in the body.”

“My Guru has said to me that in my earlier birth I had performed sadhanãs (spiritual practices) and that my Guru and I have had connection for the past many ‘janmãs’ (births). I first saw him only at the age of 45. Why this delay in meeting with him in spite of my connection with the Guru in my earlier births?”

Sri Swamiji:

“Purandaradasa was born as an aspect (‘amsa’) of Narada (Maharishi). He was carrying finance business until the age of thirty. Similarly, Ramana Maharishi who attained Jnana in a fraction of a second came to Tiruvannamalai only at the age of 16. Therefore, everything has its time marked and they occur only at that specified time.”

“Difference of opinion occurs, at times, between a Guru and sishya (disciple). Why does this happen?”

“This very question was placed before Sri Ramana Maharishi. Sri Ramana explained, “Difference of opinion is quite a common occurrence between the Guru and his sishya. Each time this happens the sishya pacifies the Guru. Peace is restored between the Guru and his sishya. But, again difference of opinion arises in some other matter. Once again they reconcile. However, if the sishya could turn his attention in trying to regain his natural status (‘Self-Realisation’) then in that Advaitic state there will not be any difference of opinion. This is the only solution for permanent reconciliation”

“You say that a true Bhakta will not pray to God even for His (God’s) darshan, for divine visions or Moksha (Liberation)! But, those like Mira who were at the highest state of Prema Bhakti pray to Bhagavãn for His darshan! Why?”

Sri Swamiji:

“Those who do bhakti for the sake of ‘chitta shuddhi’ (cleansing the mind), ‘vairãgya’ (dispassion), ‘Moksha’ (Liberation) are also Bhaktas. But, those who are devoted to Bhagavãn for the sake of Bhagavãn only are indeed high state Bhaktãs. Mira and such others were in such state. For example, let us say that the lover of a lady holds a high official post. Some people await his arrival, as some work has to be done through him. These people are like the Bhaktãs who pray to Bhagavãn for ‘chitta shuddhi’, ‘vairãgya’ and ‘Moksha’.

But, why does the lady await his arrival? Only to speak and spend time with him happily. There is no other intention behind it. In the same way Bhaktãs like Mira who were in the highest state were devoted to Bhagavãn for the sake of Bhagavãn!”

“What are the three types of Bhãgavatãs that Srimad Bhãgavatam speaks of in the 11th canto?”

Sri Swamiji:

“The first kind of Bhãgavatãs would pray to Bhagavãn to punish those who create problems to them. The second kind do not pray for punishing their enemies but pray to Bhagavãn only for their own protection and safety. They are also verily Bhãgavatãs! But, true Bhãgavatãs instead of praying to Bhagavãn for removal of any hurdles that come their way, instead of praying for protection and safety will remain quiet with the feeling that everything is His Will.”

“I perform puja to Krishna as He is my ‘Ishta Deiva’ (favourite God). Should I perform puja to other gods?”

Sri Swamiji:

“The mind and heart of a true Krishna Bhakta will not go to any other god.”
